    Quick food question

    I'm confused!

I have read on some sources to avoid things like coleslaw and potato salad due to listeria risk but I'm pretty sure it's not mentioned on the government site and my midwife didn't have a clue what I was talking about when I asked her! Useful.

Anyway, I'm dying for baked potato with coleslaw for lunch but can't make my mind up whether it's safe or not. What do you think, do you eat it?

    Thanks

    Re: Quick food question

I certainly ate it! I think the concern with listeria on salady stuff like that would be more if say you were getting it from a salad bar in a supermarket or at pizza hut or stuff thats been sitting out at a buffet. If its straight from the supermarket, to your fridge and onto your potato I wouldn't worry about it. But in all honesty I was rather lax when it came to food (and drink!!!) in pregnancy.

I eat it.... I think as long as it's shop-bought and pasteurised, it's ok.

The listereia risk is to do with the raw eggs that are used in some types of home-made mayonnaise, but as long as you're comfortable with where you're buying it from, and that it hasn't been left out for too long (i.e. on a salad bar all day), then I'm sure it's fine

I seem to remember reading this somewhere as well but to be honest I've not been strict about it - when I have my weekly tuna bap for lunch (I only allow myself one a week even though I love love love it!) I always have it with coleslaw and thats from a little sandwich shop down the road!

I guess its just one of those personal choices like with so many things in pregnancy!!

Sorry to disappoint you but it is mentioned on the NHS direct site here:
    http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles...?articleId=917

I just had to look it up for you as I know what it's like to crave something in pregnancy and be in 2 minds whether it's safe or not

On the up side, most shop bought mayonnaise (Hellmanns included) use pasteurised eggs so you could make your own (if you can be arsed at 18 weeks pregnant in this heat ). Here's a recipe for you if you want to try:

I asked about this as I was worrie too, I was told its only the fresh mayo with raw eggs thats a concern. If the product uses premade shop bought pasterurised mayo its fine.
I asked in my local deli and they looked at me like as they said they used Hellmans

OK, ignore my long-winded reply... far easier to nip down to Tesco and buy a tub (it should say on there if the eggs are pasteurised)

It's from our work canteen and it's definitely shop bought!

    Thanks everyone, I'll enjoy it.
