    rather than yellow-ey? And can I buy it at Sainsbury's?

    I made some last week (Nigella eat your heart out ) with the girls and though it looked yellowy in the jug, it looked white on the fairy cakes.

    I just used icing sugar, lurpack spreadable butter and a couple of teaspoons of milk to make it creamy.

      I am doing white and pink roses and the white needs to be ultra white, like a wedding cake. Did it look at all yellow-ey, or white white?

        I find the longer I beat it the whiter it gets - I use the Hummingbird Bakery frosting recipe and it always turns out really white! I always beat mine (in the mixer, not by hand!!) for around 5-10 minutes

          I ate the last cake yesterday or I would have taken a pic. Probably not the purest white, but white rather than yellow-y for sure.

            It is hard to do this without really white butter. I'm not sure how yellow spreadable butter is, but perhaps have a peek at the different butters in the packets

            From what you are saying it sounds like you are piping the roses? I tend to use a meringue type icing when I want really white icing (I can't stand glace icing and I'm not massively fond of fondant icing either) and you could do sort of swirls in white and pink with that kind of icing maybe?

                  Next to impossible to get yellow butter totally white - lurpak is probably the lightest, if you mix some Trex (50% butter 50% trex) you will get the same taste but the icing will be white.

                  It is so easy to get white butter in Europe but i am amazed that we don't seem to have it here.

                        I've always found Lurpack is the whitest butter, and I beat it in the mixer for ages and it gets paler.

                        Trex is good too

                        You can also buy white food colouring. I don't think you can buy it in the supermarket but if you've got time to order it, you can get it here
