View Full Version : Waking up hysterical

Hettie recently has started waking up once in the night and absolutely screaming hysterically immediately on waking.
She literally has tears flooding down her face and is hysterically screaming for mummy and daddy and clings to you like a limpet when you go and get her.
This can either be at about 12.30am or 5.30am :scratchchin:
Sometimes she will go back down in her cot after a cuddle and a shush and a rock with her dummy and bear but other times she won't be consoled at all unless we bring her in with us (needless to say that is NEVER at 12.30am......:happyno: Then I have to keep picking her up and laying her down till she goes off)
Would these just be nightmares?? Could it be anything else?? And what can I do about them???
Thanks for any help.
It's breaking my heart seeing her so distressed

It may be night terrors (but I did think these started a bit later in life) - Harry had these and we had to wake hmi so he was fully oriented, which was always hard as he was beside himself, and go through the tucking in routine again. He would be shaking and screaming but it was when he started nursery at 3 and a bit. He is a v sensitive boy and small things like just speaking to him sharply can cause an unsettled night. Is Hettie quite sensitive?
If it's night terrors they don't remember anything in the morning as far as I know. So while it's a pain and upsetting for you, there's no adverse affect on Hettie.
Other than that, is she unsettled about anything that may be causing this?

I don't have any advice but will be interested to read what replies you get as Isabel has done exactly the same once or twice recently. She has been totally inconsolable and I have had to sit up with her for ages to calm her down.

mmm well she has just moved to a new nursery where she's not settling as quickly as I would have expected (but she's fine when I pick her up in the evenings and apparently only cries for about 2 mins after I leave  )
There is also obviously the new baby which apparently they can pick up on the fact that things are changing :puzzled:
But she seems fine in the morning - v chipper indeed.
This morning she woke up SCREAMING "the buggy, the buggy" and when I went in she was actually still asleep (she couldn't see me) but when she did *wake up* and sit up she started just sobbing mummy mummy.
It's just SO distressing (not to mention knackering   )

Emma has the occasional nightmare where we have to wake her up fully as she'll be sobbing in her sleep - maybe this is another thing Emma & H are in cahoots about. It's usually daddy that calms her down though but she just clings on to us, with hiccuping sobs for a while.
No advice as I have no idea what to doa bout it.

We had this alot with Claire at around Hettie's age and I just put it down to night terrors TBH as we couldn't find anything else it could be. It was a real PITA I agree as we never took her into bed with us and I had to sit with her until she calmed down.
Does sound like a nightmare (have you been talking to her about the stresses of choosing a double buggy young lady? :teehee:).
Sounds like you're doing all the right things (froma complete novice in this department  ). Poor both of you. Hope it soon passes.

Lorna has been doing the exact same thing. I'm putting it down to one of three things................ teeth, bad dreams or being thirsty because of the heat.
It is very disturbing though to see her so upset when you don't quite know what's set her off. She normally drops straight back off to sleep although that wasn't the case last Friday night. She woke up screaming at 10pm and it was after midnight before she went back to sleep :faint:

Thanks for the advice girls.
have you been talking to her about the stresses of choosing a double buggy young lady?
 no that will be ME waking up with nightmares about the fecking contraption  I'll show you the cheap piece of tat I'm thinking about in Mothercare on Thursday and you can laugh at me and tell me I'm bonkers to consider it!!
Well last night we had NO waking at all and in fact she slept till 7.20am :faint: Which meant of course that we were late for nursery as I don't use an alarm clock anymore, now that I have a Hettie
Fingers crossed they'll happen less and less!
She does seem to be settling into nursery much better. Today she was telling me the other children's names and went round saying bye bye to them all, so she's definitely much happier there than she was last week. Still have a few tears when I drop her off but apparently they don't last long and she's absolutely fine when I pick her up!!
Thanks again for the pointers.
