View Full Version : Acid reflux
Hi guys
I've just been to the docs and diagnosed with excess acid/acid reflux... i've got a 3 month course of PPIs/antacids (Zoton) to take, but other than that the doctor didnt really give me any other advice, what foods to avoid etc
Does anyone have any experience of this (the acid relflux, not the useless doctor 8) ) and know what i should be avoiding.
I should just point out i dont find any particular food brings it on as such... but i do notice i get really bad pain/reflux if i go too long without eating... but i guess i should try and cut out certain things!
Thanks in advance!

Hi Bebeh,
I MAY have what you have but I haven't been diagnosed yet (having camera down throat in 2 weeks :-( ). I've been in and out of hospital/seeing different docs for a while now. I'm on PPI's until they diagnose whatever is wrong.
The advice I've had is to avoid:
caffeine
alcohol
fatty food
fizzy drinks
cigarettes
:sigh:
This is pretty extreme to cut out ALL of these things - but these are meant to aggravate the stomach lining or something like that.
I think everyone's different, and after a while you can sort of tell foods and drinks affect your condition.
How was your problem diagnosed btw? I've had blood tests (for ulcers) and an ultrasound (for gallstones).
Thanks for your reply, and sorry to hear you've been feeling poorly too... its a horrible thing:flowers:
hmm i dont actually drink tea or coffee, rarely drink alcohol, dont smoke and dont really eat fatty foods... i must just have an extra sensitive tummy lol!
I havent really had any tests as such... the doctor just examined my tummy, and given my symptoms decided to try me on PPIs before doing anything else... (next step will be a test for h. pylori if the PPIs dont help).
I havent had an vomiting, nausea, weight loss etc thats why the doc doesnt think its an ulcer... but like i said if the tablets dont help he'll investigate further.
What type of symptoms have you had? Ive had really bad pain under my left boob (sorry TMI) and across the top of my tummy... almost like a stitch... and i can feel something at the back of my throat which gives me a really bad taste in my mouth (acid i assume!)... but like i said i havent had any of the more common ulcer symptoms....

Other things you might want to try to reduce/cut out are :
dairy products (very very acidic)
chocolate (sorry)
tomatoes
citrus fruit
Do you get a lot of respiratory infections?
Not sure if this might be helpful to you, but my son had reflux when he was little and he seemed to be constantly uncomfortable until I put him on soya milk and he changed almost overnight, so I'd say that dairy is something to avoid.

I have had reflux badly before and the doc put me on a course of Zantac, this was when it was prescription only, and i was fine after. It did seem to be brought on by large meals and high fat foods, although i do think it can be individual, and you might have to fiddle with yr diet to work out what triggers it, if anything.

You have my sympathy. I suffer with this, the last bout lasted 2 months.
I've had blood tests etc and basically just got bad acid reflux. I was prescribed omeprazole, but this takes time to work.
For me, stress is a trigger. Also ibuprofen is a big no no as it irritates the stomach. Other than that, some of the things already mentioned, but it can be individual.
Thanks for your replies everyone!
Wow i never would have thought dairy products were acidic, in fact i used to eat a yogurt thinking it would help the pain :faint: .
I dont drink milk but i'll definately try soya yogurts... and ive been cutting out tomatoes, citrus fruit etc.
Thanks again everyone!
Natacha ive never suffered with respiratory infections... are they linked?
