Do you use your garage for your car?
I often see or hear people saying that they need a house with a garage but know very few people who actually use theirs.

We live in a terrace of townhouses each with a garage at the bottom of the garden. 5 of us share an access road to the garages and all of the neighbours park on the access road (we don't because there isn't really room and the trees drop nasty sap that doesn't wash off). Where possible we always use our garage and the neighbours parking makes it really hard to get in/out of it. There isn't quite room for each neighbour to park in front of their own garage so the ones on either side park slightly across ours, it doesn't help that they have big executive cars. Would you say anything if your neighbours did this? we own the part of the road in front of our garage.
They are (almost) double sized garages so it isn't as if there isn't plenty of room for a car + a load of junk/garden storage etc.

At our last place we had a single garage and wanted to park in it but any passengers had to get out first which made it tricky with a toddler so we usually parked on our drive. The garage was too small for my car at another house I had with a garage a few years ago.
My grandparents and in-laws use their garages but they both have little Micra's in the garage as second cars which only get used infrequently.

Just explain that you're concerned about possibly damaging their car when you're parking yours in the garage, and could they park on their own side.

There's no room in our garage for either of our cars as it's so full of junk, bikes, tools inherited from DH's dad (never used), golf clubs, christmas tree, pots of paint and DH's dart board (he goes in the garage and throws darts when he's stressed and needs to escape me!)

I've never used a garage to park a car - although I do say my car is garaged to get a reduction on my insurance

We do normally use our garage but atm it's full of MIL/FIL's furniture so the car is on our drive.

Interestingly when we viewed houses in our area before we bought this one not a single person used their garage for their cars - they were all converted into offices to make an extra room. Most of them were partitioned so half of the garage was an office space and the other half was storage space.

Yes there is always a car in our garage, two on the drive and one outside the house  yes we have four cars at present!

We have a double garage but don't use it for cars - its full of stuff though! We have a large driveway and just park the cars there.

No because our "garage" isn't actually big enough to fit a car in, not even a mini  It was an entrance to the back yard obviously at one point and the landlady turned it into a garage! We use it as a storage room/utility as we have our washing machine and tumble dryer out there and a couple of fridges/freezers and other food we can't fit into the kitchen because its so tiny. Luckily we have access to the garage from the kitchen, other wise it would just be a useless outbuilding  I dont think i actually know ANYONE other than MIL who puts their car in the garage!

Not at the moment, but we probably will do soon. It's only a single garage and all the cars are used daily so the hassle of getting in and out of it and going through car ballet with the other cars to get past in the drive - just not worth it. But if we employ a nanny who wants to use her own car for work (moderately likely) then we'll put one car in the garage. All the stuff in the garage will have to go into one of the sheds/outbuildings.

We used to when we had a micra, but our new car doesn't fit! OH keeps his push bike and motorbike in there though, so I can't even fill it up with junk!

I'm afraid I would have to say something if someone was parking in front of my garage - I have a cow when someone parks over the drive :hissyfit:

Our house has a stupidly small garage which would only just fit the car in if there was nothing else in there.

So we park on the driveway and the garage houses DH's motorbike and motorcross, freezer, tumble dryer, garden furniture, ladders, DJ equipment and other piles of junk.

We have a huge detached double garage that the previous owner of the house had built. It has stairs to an upper level, honestly, you could live in it. A builder told me that we could easily convert it to a bedroom and bathroom (although I think this would have to be done on the sly, I don't know if we'd get planning permission).

It is full of junk that dh was supposed to take to the dump before we moved, and things like our drinks fridge.

I might put my car in there in the winter because I hate having to wait for it to defrost, but we have quite a big drive so at present we just park in that. I don't actually know anyone who puts their car in their garage apart from mil and fil.

We used to put our car in the garage, but since we got the rabbits nearly 5 years ago we gave them the free run of it!

At least we have a nice big double drive (but just 1 car to go on - can I have one of yours please Joanna, ours just failed its MOT and is rotting!).

 mine are all owned by my lovely boss. The Ford RS Focus is my OH's pride and joy, the BMW is his brand new car, and the Volvo V50 is my mummy car. The Mondeo is going spare though, it is very nice, with built in Sat Nav

:happyno: I don't put my car in the garage - I used to when I had a Peugeot 206 but the Zafira won't fit, especially when there's so much extra junk in there just now  The previous owners have put old wardrobes along the back of the garage (for storage I assume but they are useless) so until we get round to binning them and clearing out the junk my car will remain on the driveway. We have another driveway at the other side of the house that DH parks on so we don't have to shift cars all the time when 1 of us wants out.

Ooh, Sat Nav! I'm crap at finding the way anywhere!

Looks like if our car isn't fixable we'll just 'borrow' my parents' spare G reg Corolla for the next 10 months...not ideal but it's got lower mileage and drives nicer than our much newer car!
