I've had it Dora, had it after DS was born. Was on it for 6 years.
It gets a bad press, weight gain - some people gain 20lbs!! and breakthrough bleeding, never knowing when you're going to have a period.
For me it was fab - I never gained any weight, and my periods stopped altogether, no spotting or owt! Took me a while to conceive J though, with a m/c before that but I'm having it again next week as our family is complete. Really convenient, you go for the jab every 12-13 weeks.
I think I'm in the minority of people who like it tho.

cheers chick im the same...i just dont know what to do im on the pill...waste of time i keep forgetting to take it... so i thought a jab i cant forget that...can u just go in for it?
Hi Dora.
I actually started on the Depo jab about two months ago because I constantly kept forgetting to take my pill. I have noticed unfortunately that I have an increased appetite, especially for sugary sweets and chocolate :-( . I have not had a proper period either, some slight spotting around the time that I should have come on and I've found my Pmt to be ten times worse that it was before.
It doesn't have the same effects for everyone though and on the plus side you don't have to keep remembering to take something, it's done and dusted for the next three months. You need to make an appointment with your Gp and tell her what you are after and why and she will then run through some options with you to find out if it will be suitable for you, then she will make an appointment for you to have it between the first three days of your period.
Hope this helps a little.

hiya i rang my dr they dont do it!!!
i have to go to a family planningclinic for apt and they will decided if to give to me..thing is what if they wont? i forget the pill scared for the coil and dont know many other options..
I don't understand why they don't do it. How strange
I'm sure the family planning clinic won't tell you you can't have it unless there is a really good reason. I'm sure if you stress to them how you keep forgetting to take your pill they will let you have the injection. The last thing they want is for you to end up having an unwanted pregnancy.

I was on it about 3 years aho for 6 or 9 months (can't remember exactly how long!) but i gained an awful lot of weight during that time, around 2 1/2 - 3 stone  it came in a weird place too, between my boobs & belly button!!
I had terrible moods swings with it too, was really depressed all the time, i was constantly screaming at people for no reason, it actually took me a while to realise it was Depo doing it to me, i stopped having the injections and my moods went back to normal with a month or two and after increasing rappidally over 6-9 months my weight actually stabalised!!
It took a VERY long time for my periods to get back to normal, about 2 years, sometimes i would go for 3 months without one although i'd still get the pains as if i was going to come on but nothing :puzzled: then the beginning of last year i started having them every other month then at the end of last year i started having them every month again, occasionally i will miss a month still but they are pretty regular now considering how hit and miss they were.
Anyway, sorry for the essay but i don't want you to end up regretting going on it like i do, i suppose it just works for some people and not others

Glad i didn't scare you LOL!!
Did you gain weight on the pill Dora? I did, i'm not sure if thats why the Depo made me gain too or whether it was just a coincidence :scratchchin:
You could always try it out for 3 months and just keep a close eye on your moods & weight just to be on the safe side, that way if you notice any major change you can just stop having it any try something else, you never know it could work fab for you

I got the Depo injection after I had Ryan, was on it for about 9 months. My periods stopped quite quickly and it was great having no periods to worry about! I found though that I was having mood swings and I put it down to the depo injection so decided to stop having it. My last jab was 15 months ago and I do feel my moods have improved - can't be sure if it was connected to Depo or just my life in general.

i rang fpc and said about my moods are horrid she said its all trial and error weather it makes u moody or not she said i could try it for 12 wks then either carry on with it or try a different pill and remember to take it first and see what happens..

Hiya, just seen this
I was on it for 6+ years and loved having no periods. However I put on masses of weight - stones and stones  and since coming off it I've lost some but the Dr said that it has slowed my metabolism and will make it harder for me to lose the weight. The other thing that worried me was that it masked a lot of the symptoms that would have led the Drs to diagnosing PCOS sooner. After coming off it, it took 18 months to get my periods back and then I had 21 periods in a year. The Dr said it could just be PCOS but would have been made worse by the injections.
My main problem is that it delayed me TTC. If you won't be having any more, then you don't have to consider that factor.
FWIW I didn't suffer from mood swings while on it. However my sex drive was absolutely zero and took over a year to come back.
As has been said, don't want to scare you but just thought I'd chip in with my experience. Hope you get want you want from the FPC

well after all that ive been adviced not to have it and go chat to my dr (post in mental health) cause a change in contraception might make me feel worse...
thanks again to you all
I remember now reading in the side affects that if you suffer from depression or mood swings you shouldn't have it as it makes it worse. I have a history of depression and yet this wasn't mentioned to me before I started taking it. I've only been on it for ten weeks but I'm seriously considering not having it again after reading all this, plus since I've been on it I have noticed that not only do I have an increased appetite and severe mood swings but I have also become quite spott. Nothing serious but I never usually get out breaks like this. And my sex drive had decreased dramatically.

Dont want to put you off but I gained 2 stone on the Depo. I was on it for about 2 years and as soon as I stopped it the weight fell off. My periods were haywire for about 2 years after I came off it. I spoke to the FPC about it and they advise against it now due to the weight gain. I am getting a coil fitted tomorrow night and I am cacking myself. Apparently its very painful!

I was on depo for 2 years before I realised that it was probably the injection that was causing my bad tempers and lack of sex drive.
I now have the implant (implanon) and its much better. One of the bonuses with the implant is that if its not for you, it can be whipped straight out, so the effects can be stopped, unlike depo, which you have to wait to wear off. I'd recommend the implant. Plus its active for 3 years!
I'm new BTW. Hi!
