:brainache: It's my OH's 25th birthday on the same day that our baby is due, so I haven't planned to do anything really on the day, just incase we either have a baby by then or I'm feeling like a heffa.

I'd really like to make him a really complicated cake... well not one that *is* complicated, but one that looks complicated  like a fire engine with a ladder and some firemen, or something.

I don't have any recipes for these kinda cakes, and haven't had a look on the net yet, just wondered if any of you might have seen something you thought "wow" when you saw, or something you've made yourself that you could pass the instructions on for?

Thanks :cheer2:

Like this (http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/special/cake/cake_fireengine/)?

Or this (http://www.kidsdomain.com/craft/firecake.html)?

And here's a pan / mould of one: http://thecookskitchen.com/browse_6132?PHPSESSID=917d482f1f9c4a216a0089f10e44 d14d

Hope that gives you some inspiration!

Wow, thanks! I particularly like the first one! It doesnt have to be a fire engine, just that was an idea. My OH isnt a fireman or anything lol. Hmmm lemme have a think about what I could make that might be relevant to him....

a house, a new baby, something to do with decorating, chemicals, cars, music, action heros.....

Have a look at these 'children's' cakes - there's a great spiderman one!

A car would be pretty easy to make - bake a large rectangular sponge then cut to shape and cover with icing / decorate. Or else that mould I found can also be decorated as a car/lorry?

Oooh I'll have a look for Jane Asher on the net, thanks :ellie:

I've been having a look on that site Helsbells and seen quite a few that look good!

http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=50213 (treasure chest)

http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=50155 (hotdog and chips lol)

http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=50124 (pig)

http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=50151 (tropical beach)

http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=50103 (boom box) think this is most fitting at the moment, the beach looks too hard!

Off to have a look for Jane Asher too, thanks ladies

Try looking at the book '30 minute kids cakes' http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0600604500/qid%3D1149156387/202-3194490-6487811

Ok, it's meant for kids, but I'm sure the cakes would still be suitable for an adult & they are designed to be fairly simple (lol - don't expect it to take only 30 minutes, though).

I did this one for Elena & I've never made anything like this before:

Something relevant will probaby mean more to him, even if it's really simple. Ie if he's an engineer - a spanner, if he enjoys car racing a wheel would work, does he have pet fish - a goldfish, if he likes football a football pitch with some mini footbller toys on it would be simple but effective...

You'll be so heavily pg that you shouldn't plan to do anything OTT. Try to keep it simple.

Good Luck!

Wow, that Spidey is impressive, they have a good slot machine one on the adult cake site too... it just looks too hard to make without using some instructions though!

That's a fab cake Scatterbrain

Here's the cake I made for my oh's birthday last year (it was 10 days pre-baby so I had a lot of time on my hands  ):

http://liam-jack.me.uk/homercake.jpg

The 'Homer gets hit on the head by a golf ball' cake was inspired by the fact oh likes golf and the Simpsons. It wasn't complicated at all, but it did take two days to make.

wow scatterbrain, that cake is amazing, might just have to purchase that book - thanks!

Angie, yours too! Did you follow instructions or just make it from scratch!?

Angie - great cake. I might have to 'borrow' your idea for OH's birthday. Homer is his hero  , although I'd have to have him holding a doughnut, pint of beer or spanner as he doesn't 'get' golf.

I made it from scratch.

I was confident enough to do it though because I'd already made a 'Homer in the bath' cake, which was inspired by a recipe in the Jane Asher book that others have already mentioned.

I don't get golf either, but at least it gets him out the house

lol they are funny!

I do like this pirate though http://www.sugarcraft.com/catalog/pans/pirate.htm how would I make his face quite so rounded?

And I like the slot machine http://www.sugarcraft.com/catalog/pans/luckyday.htm

Do you think the library would have some books which I might be able to find something and photocopy from, or do they not do cook books in librarys?!

You just make a normal round cake then carve around the edges to round them off before icing it. lol- if you carve too much off you just 'glue' it back on with Jam.
