When i had Joshua i had an epidural, obviously this goes in the spine, i get back ache every now and then, right where the epidural was postioned.

Just wondered if any damsels who have had epidurals get this problem or know anyone that does?

I have had an ongoing weakness in my back since I had Ella 2 and a half years ago. I had a failed epidural and had never had any problems before. So it could be from that - though I don't know if it is from lugging a toddler around!

I get lower back pain and find it hard to load the washing machine or reach things in low cupboards. I don't think it;s to do with my epidural, maybe I'm just a worn out old hag:grin:

I had lower back pain before I got pregnant which was made worse by having SPD during my pregnancy. When I went in to have my section, they tried to give me an epidural but I couldn't even deal with the pain from the anaesthetist prodding around. After a couple of times of trying to get the needle in I asked them to stop as it was just too painful and ended up having a general. When I eventually got out of bed, I was in agony and could barely move - the bruising from the failed epidural was horrendous. Ever since I've had incredible back pain. Even saw physio for a few weeks after birth but I don't think it helped v much (and maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance).
I'm still in agony now - don't think lugging a baby round and lifting etc helps at all but I'm thinking of going to a chiropractor to see if they can help.

It's funny though because whilst I was in hospital the consultant anaesthetist came to check me out and he said that an epidural wouldn't cause that pain so I don't know what to think but something definitely made my back worse that day.

I'm interested to hear that it's not just me!

I had an epidural, and Evie was back-to-back dureing labour, so I laboured all in my back (15 hours before they got the epidural ), and I still get very bad back pain at times. It starts from where the epidural went in, and is from there down. A couple of weeks ago it was so bad I wondered if I was in labour again!

If you've had an epidural it could be to do with the fact that it works on your spinal nerves, so they may have become more sensitive, or maybe very slightly damaged (only enough to cause back ache) when they put in the epi.

I also had an epidural and suffer from lower back pain - I end up walking round like an old woman because It hurts to straighten up! I contacted my local physio dept and i'm getting an appt next month. She said that the most likely cause is the the hormone produced in pregnancy causes all the ligaments to soften, and when they tighten up again some months later, they can knit back in the wrong postition, causing a sprain. i've got to do some pelvic floor exercises and ab crunchs etc and take a course of ibuprofen to reduce the inflammation. Fingers crossed! Hope this helps anyone who has it too xx

I have back pain as well, don't know whether the epidural has anything to do with it as I got back pain when I was pregnant from about 16 weeks I think. I have always had some degree of pain in my back but it does vary a lot.
