View Full Version : So how are we all doing on our name selection?

WEll now that we know that we're having a little boy (Jack as we've called him - well the bump - won't be that irl much as I love it) DH has finally come round to discussing names :cheer2:

One HUGE positive about having a boy is that it's going to be loads easier to find a name!

We have a couple that we like (well that I like and DH doesn't seem to mind which means that I can get them past him if I try hard enough!!) although I'm not sure that I LOVE them. :yeahright:

SO suggestions for a "pony club name" (as I saw on another thread which is a brilliant description and so not to everyone's taste but actually right up our street!! )

I love names like Charles (but not Charlie), Edward (but not Eddie ) hence I can't have either of those, besides which they are far too popular for my incredibly fussy taste

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And more importantly though, how is everyone else getting on???!!!

Well it's obviously really early days for me yet but we are going to have a total nightmare! I have picked 2 girls names and 2 boys names but DH won't entertain any of them - I got a definite NO to 3 of them and a lukewarm 'mmm' to the other one.

At this rate if it's a girl it will be Paige II as we can't agree on anything else we like!!

Unfortunately I can't get DH off Ptolemy or Hepistachian (sp? roman general dude I think?)

While I greatly admire his interest in ancient roman and greek history I think not.

Good job it's all hypothetical

P.S if anyone does know of any relatively "normal" names of those origins let me know! Only ones I've come across are Lysander, which I quite like, and Alexander, which I love but is very common nowadays....

katkinn

I was about to say - errrrrrr micah is there something you'd like to tell us??!! :faint:

Well I'm with your DH on the ancient roman and greek. I LOVE Homer (but can't because of that fecking simpson eejit) and also Horatio (but I am really worried that fellatio is too similar a word - not sure kids would pick up on that though, or if it's just my filthy mind but either way, it's not a great choice for a boy name because of it imo!)

Although I do think your DH's choices are a TAD way out for me!

For a girl I SO SO SO SO wanted to call her Antigone (Tiggy for short) but I don't think I would ever have got him past that.

The other name that he wouldn't go for was Beatrix (Trixie) as he hated Trixie (said it was like a cough mixture - wtf??)

The only name we did agree on was Octavia (Tavia) which we both loved but that's all a tad academic now.

Just trying to come up with an unusual boys name.............................

Well, obviously we did chose names in the end but it was VERY last minute!!! In fact it was just before midnight on Thursday that DH turned to me and suggested "Peony" (after I'd asked him to buy me some) and then we both said in unison, "I think we should go for Beatrix". 2 hours later I started having contractions so maybe there's something to be said for a bit of indecisiveness!!!!
Am soooo interested in what name he'll end ujp with Kat!!!

oh yes...other names he's after are Gaius (as in Caesar), and Lucius, which aren't quite as bad. I like Lucian too but can't think how you'd use it as an "everday" name, iyswim.

He says as I picked C's name (well she picked it herself imo..) he gets to pick the next...hmmm.....

I will quiz him for you and see what else he can come up with greco-roman style....

ETA....he really wante ptolemy last time so I told him I wanted Ghengis-Aldolf-Mao...I think he thought I was joking

Hector? Jocasta? Marcus? Antonia? Olivia? Claudius? Julia? Paris? Agamemnon? Achilles?

Or am I getting too carried away with ancient history?

Thank you for starting this thread Katkinn, we are in the same position!

We HAVE to find a boys' name in case it's a blue one, and we can't agree - apart from MAYBE Charlie

Out of the box ones I like but DH doesn't are Jago, Etienne, Acer and Beau.

Can't use for family/friends reasons - William and Henry.

Vetoed - Miles & Tristan.

I was even looking through DH's registers as he was doing his reports last night:lol:

I have stopped thinking about it too much, because I was seriously losing hours of sleep over it, but the situation is a bit imminent now, and there's no running away from it.

The thing is I want the name to be 'the one', not just one that will do IYSWIM, although DH says that our girls' name isn't 'the one' for him - bad luck he's already agreed :cheer2: :teehee: Although we don't have a second name for a girl

we are still with our original short list of 2 which both of us think are ok but not amazing.

so we haven't got any further :hissyfit:

and unfortunately i don't think last minute naming is going to work for us either...

I have mine nearly sorted...
I like Rihana Rose for a girl, but as it's that pop singers name I am toying with Orihanna or Brianna... Kenidee prefers Orihanna!
I like Curtis Matthew or Lucas Matthew or Logan Matthew for a boy... cannot decide, although Kenidee has said she hates Curtis and will never speak to me or the baby if I call it that  jeez 8 year olds can be so dramatic

I was nearly 6 when my mum was expecting my sister and I told her that if the baby was a boy I would either a) throw it in the bin or b) throw it in the river!!!!

Kenidee wants a sister too... but has said if its a boy she will only love it (and love me) if its not called Curtis

:ellie: go Henrietta Figg!! FAB names (must be something to do with you having Henrietta as your sig name - ones of the best names out there!! But then I am completely and utterly biased! )

Actually in your list is our fave fave name (which I LOVE especially with the ever so slightly bonkers middle name that I think I've NEARLY persuaded DH to have :ellie: )

But it is verging on the more "normal" and I just wondered if it's really mean to give a boy a slightly more way out name? :scratchchin: All the blokes that I know do say that you CAN'T give a boy an odd name - they WILL hate it and will get the piss ripped out of them their entire school lives.

Even my 10 year old nephew at the weekend said, Auntie Kat, please will you give Jack a normal name so he doesn't get bullied at school  (his best friend at school is called Paris :zombie: and he's constantly having to stand up for him as the other boys are mean to him behind his back  ) Actually I've decided my two kids are never going to leave the house!!

What do other people think about a more way out name for a boy?? Should I stick to it for a middle name??

Hi Katkinn!

Glad you approve:lol: !!

Here are a few more I've thought of:

Julius
Jolyon
Tarquin
Torquil
Rory
Miles
Roderick

I've known people with all the names on my list, some are adults and some are children/toddlers, I think unusual names are fine for girls and boys.

Hi Kat,

Well, as of yesterday I'm on the hunt for a boys name too!

Finding it really hard to think of any names at all ATM and it has be something that sounds good with DS1 (Taylor Jack Charles). Also DH choose DS1's name so I get to choose this ones 1st and 2nd name (will have Charles as he's 3rd name as it's a family name). So far on our list we have Luca and Cowen/Cowan but i'm not 100% on either.

I do think a boys name shouldn't be too way out as I think it's harder for a boy to carry off a more unusual name than a girl. I think Hugo sounds good with Hettie. Think it has a nice flow to it.

I know a baby called Gyles. Actually, I quite like it - but I reckno the name grows with the baby anyway - they suit their own name IYSWIM.

Hugo is a lovely name. Also like Rory and Miles.

Horatio - I take the point about fellatio - sorry :teehee:
Timothy - lovely
Stuart - no
Piers - no
Hugh - yes, lovely
Gregory - reminds me of a baker :loco: don't know why?
Rupert - too "jilly cooper"
Freddie - nice but getting more common
Guy - Nov 5th

Dominic - mmmm, yes
Marcus - too arrogant
Peter - nice normal boys name
But of course these are just my opinion and we can't all like the same thing

Hi Katkinn!

Glad you approve:lol: !!

Here are a few more I've thought of:

Julius---> Reminds me of a boy at my school called Julio. He was very clever, but not keen on the name.
Jolyon---> never heard this one, is it Julian but spelled different? If it is, I always prefer the boring normal spelling to be honest.
Tarquin----> I LOVE this one, thing of the modern parents though.
Torquil--> never heard this one, bit weird for me
Rory----> Lovely, but a bit of aproblem for me, my *R* sounds different to yours
Miles---> Ahemmm I like this one a lot
Roderick---> nice but not keen on Rod (sounds like short for rodney)

.

I used to work with a Jolyon - he was a lawyer and it suited him (i.e he was a bit of an @rse - sorry!!)

I know a Miles and he's as gay as a picnic basket - not that being gay is a problem, it's just that we instantly think 'gay' (which means my DH would reject it - the name, not the child!! )

We know LOADS of Ruperts but we were raised in Epsom = Epsom Derby = horse town = pony club LOL!!!!

I agree with not giving a boy a too way out name. That's why we liked Oliver; as it was a traditional name but also sounded modern (IYSWIM) I honestly didn't think that it was that popular until he went to nursery and there are 4 of them in his class :happyno: :happyno: O's middle name is James so I suppose he could always use that if he despises his 1st name.

Living just outside Manchester unsurprisingly we don't know any Ruperts!

I also used to know a Jolyon and he hated his name. He used to get sick of people asking him to spell / pronounce it. He goes by the name of Joe now.

Just realised that I haven't made any sensible suggestions!

A well as a long-time member (although blacklisted during the later years  ) member of the 'actual' Pony Club (whose mother was in fact the membership secretary for many moons) I'm afraid I can't be of that much help. We didn't have that many boys (the ones we did have were well and truely mauled every year at camp as well - all I can say is if you want to keep your daughters 'nice' and innocent then DO NOT put them in the Pony Club  :happyno: .

The boys we did have were all rather standard-fare names wise: Henry, Hugh, Tom, Robert, Alexander Michael (hmm that's actually my son's name  - don't tell my OH  ), Marcus, Anthony, Gary (let me guess, NOT what you're looking for :happyno: - he was nuts as well, stunk of cow dung and spoke with a lisp), Bruce (very very posh - no idea where the 'Bruce' came from), Teddy (utterly gorgeous tetrathelete  ) and Fred. We were a rather scruffy branch though - lots of farmer's children, butcher's kids and things held together with baler twine. The Pony Club's either side of us were much grander and even had people with TRIPLE barrelled surnames (the Clive-Ponsonby-Fane's no less!) but I didn't really know any of their boys.

Having also worked amongst countless hold horsey duffers I can't report that many exciting men's names their either. Just lots of very 'solid' old fashioned things and also a HUGE tendancy to actually go by your middle name. It used to drive me mad admin wise - for example the details say 'Anthony Ian Edward' and the guy is known as Ian or in fact 'John' which apparently is the Scottish version of Ian. Confused? I often was. It was their wives that had the rather more eccentric titles - they all had mad nicknames obviously stemming from their days at boarding school and they were actually OFFICIALLY (as in it would go on their name badges) known as things such as: Muff, Posy and (my very very favourite) dear old BONK :teehee: :loco: .

Good luck anyway - I seem to remember that last time your OH had a 'thing' for the name Imran - we certainly didn't have any of those in the Pony Club :faint: !

oooh bisy I am SO envious!!! (although to be fair, your need is more urgent than mine!!)

DH keeps saying - oh we don't need to talk about this now, we've got ages.

But I say to him (and maybe I'm bonkers for thinking this) - look, this child will have to live with this name for the rest of his life. At least we can actually take a couple of months, making sure that we think the name is ok, rather than one that we think of at the v last min and then regret x months/years down the line. The least he deserves is for us to actually put some THOUGHT and research into it. But he thinks I'm totally nuts.

Plus he CANNOT get round the fact that I can't just give this baby a "normal" name (ie Edward, William, Jack etc). HOW can I get through to him???!!

I had two friends round for dinner lsat night - one of my oldest friend and his best friend - and both agreed that they understood why I wanted to find a more *unique* name.

In fact, whilst both were a tad sceptical of my fave name, both agreed after an hour or so (and admittedly I was plying them with wine :teehee: ) that it had definitely grown on them and they did think it was quite cool.

DH still remained :yeahright: though

I feel your pain Katkinn - obviously I have got quite a while but I feel the need to know what this child's name will be before it's born. Paige used to kick when we called her name so I wanted to have the same bond with this one. I have 4 girls names on the table and 2 boys - he did concede last night that one of my girl's names WASN'T off the table - but he wasn't sure and he hates all the other names. Mind you I told some of my local friends the other day and they literally went  - you'd have thought I'd said I'd wanted to call him DogCrap or something - so maybe its best we didn't use it as I think people round here just don't 'get it'.

I heard a lady at the airshow on Sunday call to her three sons and they were Jude, Huxley and Quinn (well I hope it was Quinn - it sounded like she said Quim  :teehee: !). Quite unusual choices (although my OH was laughing his head off at Huxley 'Pig').

We used to try our names out in the broadest accents of people we know too to check that they sounded OK - one of the funniest was my DH saying Amelia in a broad Cardiff accent - we went off it quite quickly after that

This is EXACTLY what we did - we were living in East London at the time so would say all the names in a very Laaahndan accent. Hence Nathalie got the boot sharpish. Can't reproduce it but suffice to say it sounded very very common indeed.

There have been some lovely names suggested. I think one of the ones I have liked the most is Guy actually. At least that's the letter before H!

What about Basil? I know its a bit Fawlty Towers but I like it!

Now that definitley fails the East London test - it just sound awful!

I am not too sure about it tbh, I don't think I could ever get the image of Sybil screeching Baaaaaaasillllllll out of my head.

I do like Jonty and an ex of mine was Jolyon but he was a bit wet so that puts me of that name.

oh I love Basil - really liked Baz but Dh was  And to be fair with our surname he would be someone who grew basil :teehee:

ooh cathyw - Guy was my fave name last time round but I loved it right at the beginning of my pg when I was really really sick and it now makes me feel sick every time I say it :loco: (same with the girl's name Claudia - yup bonkers!!) Plus it is my bil's name so that would be every so slightly odd.

I do have my fave name which I LOVE LOVE LOVE but DH is still v much on the fence - to be fair he's now not saying NO outright so I'm definitely making headway. :cheer2:

Although he has told a couple of people at work and *apparently* they've all said "isn't that a dog's name??"

ok so it DOES sound like it COULD be a dog's name, but then aren't loads of names potential dog's names?? Toby, Max etc etc?????

If it's the dogs name I'm thinking of it's cool, and goes well with Hettie

I'm the same with SuDoku - did it when suffering m/sickness and now I can't do it as I feel sick! Bonkers....yep!

bisy - :teehee: Had Mr Backson got his heart set on it as well?

DH wants us to have a couple so that we can see what they look like when they're born!

I LOVE Lucas but definitely agree that it's becoming too popular. Same with Felix for me

And I've mentioned Jonty a number of times - I love it "it's a gay name"

Jolyon - mmm not too sure about

kat, i'm intrigued to hear what your possible dog's name is!

no, mr backson wasn't set on it, we have i think three possibilities now, one definitely a middle name, of the other two, the french name is ok but doesn't set my pants on fire, the new name is quite cute and unassuming and i like it cos it isn't a try hard name and totally not something that people would think we would go for. i'm still not sure its the name we really really love which is what we're still hoping for, but its not bad.

i quite like jolyon, i've only heard it once before on a guy my age, is it popular now?

felix, well mr backson was quite set on that, but i can't go past the knock knock joke (with apologies to all those felixes out there!) - ie felix my icecream i'll lick his.... (lame i know....)

Oooh, Rob said that we couldn't have my favourite boys name (if Dixie or lola had been a boy) because it was a dogs name

I wonder if it is the same name, I'm going to PM you and tell you what mine was!!

Sam.... yes I can go one step further. If we have a boy, DH wants to name him after his dead dog, Sam. :loco: TBF I do like Samuel- it is very sweet & goes really well with our surname- it's just when he asks how we chose his name...

I also object to it because of it's popularity. We haven't actually started discussing names yet but I will need to pick very carefully if I am to usurp Samuel!

You see Sam is a really really lovely name - it goes really well with Jen and it does indeed go fabulously with your surname. But this:

DH wants to name him after his dead dog, Sam.

is indeed frightening :loco: :teehee:

Pikey - any inclinations as to what flavour?? Alexis and I were saying earlier - we reckon blue!

Kind of a lurker here but had to tell you all that my cousin named his first born after his dead dog  :loco:??? It wasn't even a nice dog!

I :lurve: the name Hector, it sounds really strong and dependable. It's really popular in the Western Isles/Highlands of Scotland.

I love Hamish & Archie.

DH is desparately hoping for a girl, in which case we're a wee bit stumped. We have 2 in the ballpark - Matilda (Tilda) & Miriam (Mim)

I really think it's another boy though, in which case, he will be Gabriel (Gabe). Have really dug my heels in, because I adore this name & it had been previously dismissed as being "too gay" I quote - "He'll get called Gay Boy at school..." He's finally backed down though. Hoorah! :cheer2:

I am feeling a bit guilty, as I've chosen all our names, but, as I told him. I'm the one who's with them most of the time so I might as well be calling out names I like!

Not long to find out now Miss Melon!!! :ellie:

I know!!! Can't deny this for much longer....

People have been asking me how I'll cope with 3 under 4 (I have no family anywhere near, either 350 miles away or on the other side of the world!) & I just say I'm trying not to think about it!!!
