View Full Version : Have you ever heard of this happening before?
My friend has had her baby - they had whatever the test is where the amniotic fluid is checked after a dud nuchal - were told girl - and it is a boy?!!!!
How can that happen -surely the tests must have been mixed up?
I'm all worried I am having a boy after all now - only seen on scan!!!
Az Not that a boy would be disasterous or anything but still I would be :brainache:

You mean an amniocentisis......That does sound odd as I thought that was the only accurate way of telling a baby's sex!
I am going to go googling but I had the same fears re Holly and even after 3 scans thought she was going to grow a willy!!!!
Lewpy xx
yep I mean an aniothingy!
Maybe MY bump has a small willy!!!

:brainache:
Is an amnio different from a genetic test? 'Cos I thought the gene thing proved the sex with x and y thingys. I guess mistakes can happen, although I would probably think they are rare.
Azana, I wouldn't mention to DH about your bump having a small willy, he might get upset about it all.
I'll put my scientific hat on!!!
With an amnio you are collecting fluid from mummy and looking for cells to culture from the fluid. Soooo the theory is that the cells "ought" to be baby's cells but sometimes they end up culturing mummy's cells cos they can float around too (does this all make sense  :brainache: ) So in your friend's case they must have cultured maternal cells rather than baby cells so it's definitely NOT 100% accurate (which has been one of the reasons that I'd never consider one). The chorionic villus sampling method, which has higher risks, is much more accurate....
So if you are told from an amnio that you are having a boy that's 100% but if it's a girl....

Oh and just to frighten you even more Az, one of the girls on the May thread was told at 22 weeks she was having a girl and when she had a growth scan at 35 weeks - err there were two wee testicles and a winky
They are much more likely to mistake a boy for a girl on the scan.... Sooooo you may yet have a blue one

Thank heavens for someone in the know (and thank you for explaining it so it makes sense).
So in this case, if they have cultured maternal cells, then is the downs syndrone result void too? I never realised that amnio wasn't 100% definate. Is there a figure for how accurate it is?

So Azana.... boy names then :puzzled: :scratchchin: ........
SP
Yup - it's not 100% accurate for Down syndrome either....
It is rather unusual to culture only maternal cells but I have no idea the accuracy rates or where you could get hold of them tbh...

Even with a CVS, if it's something critical then they may take maternal and paternal blood samples so that they can compare what they have taken from the cv to mum and dad. Though the reason is to do with recessive inheritance, it will also guarantee that any gender prediction is OK.
You lot are SO clever. I will pass on the info to the parents when I see them. Also I will now be less surprised if the bump has a willy - especially as with E I craved satsumas and this time it has been cheese????? oh and grapes!!!!! - actually a bit of a seventies cheese and wine party theme going on.
Silver I have no boys' names - mind you I still have no girls' names either.....sigh.....
Shamu shouldn't you be giving birth or something ;)

The critical part of your last post is the "or something" option  Actually have decided that beanette is not allowed to come before the weekend as otherwise the mad in laws will rush over to see her/me even though I'll still be blood splattered/milk leaky/hormonal etc etc They have booked another 3 month trip to Malta leaving on Monday and are now feeling a little peeved that they won't meet their grandchild before they go - err babies don't turn up to order you know  :hissyfit:
So having spent last weekend doing all I could to get her out I'm now hoping she doesn't arrive until they're safely on the plane - there has been talk of them cancelling the trip  :bwahaha:
Oh and Red thanks for the more indepth CVS info - didn't know that.....

Im really scared they have got my scan wrong now:shock: I have been thinking my bump is completley different than last time. I wouldnt mind having a boy, but my parents have bought pink wardrobes, which are full of girls clothes  and they are so pretty:rolleyes:
The guy that did the scan was really shirty with me, but also seemed like a no messing pro so

Well, I don't know if it's always done. It was done in our case. I think because Helena has two different missense transcriptions (D98N and L195P) there is a risk that either of us could actually be carrying both of those on the same gene. So they want to check that is not the case - if it was, a carrier offspring would also have both and show up in culture as having 2 errors, and thus look like a galactosaemic not a carrier. => unnecessary termination.
As it happens, neither of us carry both (vanishingly rare, obviously) and Lexie carries neither. Which meant we knew we had a clean sample and could be certain of her other results.
I don't know what would have happened if her test had turned up my carrier gene (L195P). Obviously at that point they have my DNA to compare against, but I don't know if this is routinely done to check if it's a bad sample, or if it's just that sprog has inherited mum's gene.
Anyhoo - keep your legs crossed, and hope you do manage do dodge the in-laws. :zombie::zombie: I think generally in-laws should only be allowed to visit in hospital if they promise to stay outside the room and LO is passed out to them to hold for 5 mins then they can p1ss off.

I had two "different" bumps as well, but I have two boys. Don't think it makes any difference!!
