View Full Version : Choosing names 2nd time around

How the heck are you meant to do it???????? Think I've read every baby name book under the sun AND the list that the lovely Shamu sent me of the top 2000 names but we're still stumped.

I know we have a RREEAALLLLLLYYYYY long time to decide but honestly I think this baby is going to be christened Heffalump (what I'm calling it now!)

I have 2 girls names and 2 boys names and DH won't agree to any of them - despite the fact one of the boys names was the one we picked last time

The criteria second time around seems really daunting! I think if it's a girl it should have a 1 syllable first name and 2-3 syllable second name so that it fits with Paige Patricia. For boys we are stuck with a 1 syllable middle name (traditional in DH's family to have his Dad's name as middle name) so it should really have a multi-syllable first name IMHO.

ARRGGGHHHHHH. Do you think it's child abuse to christen our child Heffalump Lane?!!!:scratchchin:

Has your DH come up with any names he does like? LOL.
Just keep on the look out - there's no hurry at this stage to decide on a name. You even have 40 days after the baby is born to register.

BTW, I don't really understand why a girl would have to have the same number of syllables as Paige?

Don't be daft - my dear husband doesn't do anything thesedays so of course I'm the one doing all the searching! When I got him to look through the books last time he just kept making ridiculous suggestions.

I should have mentioned, I have a morbid dislike of names that can be shortened - nobody calls me by my 3 syllable name, rather about 200 shortened versions and it annoys me. Therefore none of the names I have picked can be shortened (in theory the boys names *could* be but I've never heard them shortened).

Ah - makes sense now.

What are your criteria - apart from not wanting to be shortened? Do you want a name with a Welsh influence? E.g. hard to shorten Carys or Cerys.

I would LOVE welsh names but DH says no (although our boys name IS welsh - hee hee!)

No real criteria except, in DH's words, no 'gay' names!!!!  I'd rather they weren't too popular but I don't think we are going to be able to get round that.

We thought we had picked little Cs name then at 8 and 1/2 months he changed his mind !!!!!!!!! It took us ages to pick that name so i sulked and said if he didnt come up with a decent name on the same comparison I would just call the child Three (as we both have a child each already) He backed down as i squeezed his hand to pulp in the delivery room

sooooooooooooo other than hijacking your post with an irrelevant reply i would suggest you dont choose anything until you have given birth - you have 6 weeks then!!!:ellie:

We are finding it impossible too.

We've had a girls' name since before TTC, which DH has come round to, although not agreed on a 2nd name, however a boys' name is completely different. Totally stuck!

I've had loads of names vetoed, and now DH likes one I came up with at the weekend, but I'm not too sure

I would be really grateful if someone could forward me Shamu's list, because I'm getting desperate!

Sorry for slight hijack,

Sparkliness xx

Sparks - send me your email address and I'll send you the lists!
Lois - we're still not 100% committed to a name  Maybe that's why beanette isn't making an appearance
Just keep working on DH - he'll come round eventually

We're having a nightmare too. We know we're having a girl and we just can't agree on anything . I'm secretly hoping that my DH will just give in and agree to the name that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE and he got me to admit as much last night!

We're going to wait and see how we feel after she's born.

Shamu, I shall pm you my e-mail now - please can you send me the list too?

Oh, and the other thing I'm finding really irritating is DH is suddenly deciding he likes names that he previously vetoed. :brainache: . Last night he decided that he really liked Bo (means precious in Chinese) after all ... now that I'm not so keen of course. Grrrrrr.

DH point blankly refuses to discuss any names until we find out the baby's sex   He just keeps coming out with really silly names. He claims also to have chosen Oliver's name all by himself

Baby names, along with first songs at weddings, are my favourite subjects :ellie: :ellie:

Hey we still haven't picked a boys name yet.

Tho DH did inform me last night that we had decided on Kane but I think he may have been having that conversation in his sleep as altho I think its quite nice I haven't decided on it at all.

It annoys me that he thinks he gets to choose the name again.:hissyfit:

Good luck finding the perfect name but try not to stress as you have plenty of time. I am thinking of grabbing DH by the genitalia if its a boy and saying we were going for Caleb weren't we?

I ahve tried gentle persuasion and sexual favours but the man is too stubborn for his own good

Andie, I'm banking on the fact that after you've just been through labour, surely no request is too much???

I feel your pain Andie:hissyfit: Took me FIVE YEARS to work on DH and get him to agree to Paige and I now have just 7 months to work on him this time. We will find out the sex though and that is when I really apply the pressure. I like to know what our baby is going to be called - I know it's just coincidence but when I was expecting Paige, she kicked when I called her name!!!

Aww how sweet is that Lois :lurve::lurve::lurve:

She would only do it for me and DH. MIL wanted to know the sex and tried putting her hand on the bump and calling 'Paige' and 'Owen' to get a reaction from the bump (we didn't tell her we knew the sex!!) but she didn't play ball!!!

We're hoping for Phoebe or Daisy for a girl next time, but I have no probs in shortening names as pet names.

My name, as you know, could never be shortened to any pet form and I hated it.

Can't wait to have a Pheebs or a Dais...and if I had a Grace, I would no doubt call her Gracie. (My other fave name that OH hates!)

I was like this first time around. My name was always automatically shortened by everyone too (so hard to guess from my sig name)
I was determined to have a name that could not be shortened, in the end we chose scarlett the day she was born and as yet no one has tried to shorten it, so result!!! they're usually too busy saying pimpernel or o'hara to try. doh!

Our problem is that our surname begins with 'a' and all the names i like seem to begin with 'a' or 'e' and so sound a bit daft when teamed with our surname.and now ive got to try to pick a name that won't sound daft with scarlett too, ruling out names beginning with 's'.

this time around ones things for sure, im not telling ANY relatives, ANY of the names we have in mind, it nearly caused ww3 last time round and hurtful comments were plentiful, pleasing everyone was so difficult, in the end we just choose the one we liked the most and that suited her best. might just call next one teabag or something to really wind them up!!!! :)

grrrrr, why is this so awkward!!!!

Whoops!! Sorry Minks!!!  Normally when people first meet me they do use my full name but then after a while it becomes a shortened variation. At my old job I was working for maybe 2 days when my boss came to me and said 'your name is too long, can we call you something else?' So then I had to tell them what my family call me and it stuck. The same happened at my current job. In fact I've got a new nickname at this job - HRH - because my boss addresses emails as Hi Ness!!!! Well, she thinks it's funny anyway!!!

Another nobody here as well! :toetap:

It wouldn't have even occurred to me to call you by a shortened name as you introduced yourself with your full name right back at the start!

As you know I'm all for shortened names! Me, DH and Madam are all known as our shortened names! :thumb:
