Damz you would be well within your rights to move this to the food and drink forum, just don't know how busy it is there yet, so am posting here and half expecting it to be moved...
anyway, I was at Noo Noo's house the other day and she made the kids toasties, I nicked a bit of Laura's and it was devine, good old cheese and ham toastie so I was inspired to go and get a George Foreman! Well DH has had cheese toasties for brekkie ever since and Laura loves them too. The days I have been home I've been naughtily having a cheese toastie too, they're too addictive. So, I need some more ideas, bearing in mind I am on a diet! What can I toast please girls, other than cheese? I may buy some low fat edam, but I want some more variety and ideas! I love the way that if you put raw onion in the toastie it goes all cooked so may try that with red pepper too...

Mushrooms will also cook with the cheese. Cheese and beans (be v careful of leakage).
Spinach is also nice, or even rocket - obviously in with something else.

Mozarella and pesto, you can get half fat mozzarella (I've spelled it 2 ways, one of them is bound to be right. Or not)

Probably not that great for you but I love peanut butter toasties.
Mozzarella and sundried tomatoes with basil is nice (bit like pizza in a toastie) and you could try lots of variations on this eg, olives, anchovy, pepper, artichoke maybe
How about ham and emmentaal (sp?)
I also used to make brie/camembert with cranberry sauce (yummy)
Also try using panini instead of bread.
HTH! (you've made me hungry now!)

I do a veggie one that's lovely......onion, peppers and mushrooms.
The mushrooms can make the bread a bit soggy.
Cheese and picallili is scrummy.

Spinach ricotta and nutmeg (watch the water in the spinach though for making the bread soft)

Tuna and cheese??
I'd forgotten how good tuna toasties are - I have mine just with salad cream (no cheese).

great ideas here girls! I think many of these will be ok with edam (and still diet friendly, especially if I use a cheese slicer and get thin slices). Liking the idea of mushrooms too! Mad Madam, how do you stop the spinach mushying the toastie? Maybe just use a little bit? Ricotta is quite healthy too isn't it?
GOT to try the tuna and salad cream one now - do you mean tuna mayo and then extra salad cream?

august/hellsbels, love mozzarella (sp?!). Will def. give that a go. AND love panini (but it's a little grill, so not sure it would fit).
yum, brie and cranberry sauce.......

that sounds nice. would love to get some of that turkey ham but I like my "birds" to be free range and I've never seen it free range before. Although I did get some turkey pieces from Tesco the other day that are free range!

I usually mix tuna with salad cream (not mayo) and put in sandwich. If you're feeling really daring you could have extra salad cream with it!

I'm doing it because it works for me, and I find it easy - as long as people don't taunt me with the idea of toasties!!

Great thread BL!! :thumb:
I had some left over beef the other day, so I popped in a toasted sarnie with cheese, then pickle for me, and tomatoes for OH - they were gorgeous and VERY filling!
We have a George, and I've never used it to make a toastie - is it the same principle as when you're using a proper toastie maker, as in you butter the outside of the bread and just pop it in? Sounds good though! The thing is, we have the large George, and it's a PITA to clean  so don't use it as much as we should.

It just has to be cheese and chorizo every time in the Jules house!
My favourite is:
wee slices of spring onion
cheese
creamed corn (if you can get it, otherwise corn niblets) and
ham if you fancy it.
YUMMY!!!!

You can use those part baked rolls in the George as well, I just cut them in half then fill them and bung them in the George. They cook and turn out like a panini.
Fave fillings are goats cheese and tomato relish and tuna, onion and cheese.
brie and mango chutney, or indeed good old cheddar and mango chutney is lush. Or cheese bacon and mango chutney.
I like mango chutney - can you tell? :eating:

oh WOW Jules cheese and chorizo! I have these manchaga (tangy hard white Spanish) cheese and chorizo rolls sometimes from the deli - that would be well fine!
Alycat/Suzie, the george is fab at making toasties. it's really easy - you just spray the grill plates with spray oil, and get your sandwich and pop it on the plate and close the lid. Takes about 5 minutes for a cheese toastie. My grill is a "baby" one but Noo Noo had a really big one and she made three toasties at the same time! Noo Noo will come back from hols to find out that her grilling machine has found world fame!!
Minky, that sounds so so nice. I have always fancied trying to use that creamed sweetcorn for something but never known what. HAVE to try that, I love spring onions as well.
kate, I'll get some of those rolls, and I have some tomato relish in the fridge so might have to try that out with some yummy cheese. mango chutney sounds lovely too, love creamy white cheeses with fruity chutneys and jellies.
