I've just had a letter through from our council to say that as of next month, our refuse collectors will no longer take garden waste (hedge clippings, mown grass etc), and for this reason, we are all being provided with a compost bin.

This sounds great to me, as I don't have much time to do the garden, but I will do next year, so I know I'll have some good compost to put down.

My question is - is it easy, and is it worth it, in terms of garden benefits?

I was surprised to read that, amongst lots of things, you can put egg shells in there, as well as shredded paper - so no chance of your bank statements getting into the wrong hands!

Composting is dead easy  It will be a bin-shaped tube with no bottom, and a lid; all you do is put some twiggy stuff in first to make sure that air can get in to circulate, then you put all your garden and kitchen waste in, anything like teabags etc. (Cork doesn't compost, which I found out when I emptied mine and about 50 fully formed corks came out  ) It might start to look full but then when you check a few days later it will have gone down again as it gets processed. Don't put anything cooked in as that can attract rats. I empty mine about one every two years and get loads of compost for the garden, you just spread it around.
