View Full Version : Help please - How to cook rice?!?!
I'm making a Prawn Biryani (sp?) for tea tonight from a WW NoCount recipe, it says cook the rice then add it to the other ingredients but i can't cook rice
I've tried several times, followed the instructions of the pack step by step but it always ends up in a vile soggy mess or is rock hard and tastes like dirt
Can someone help me please??
Best way I have found to cook rice is to use half a cup per person, put it into a pot.
Then add water to the depth of your second joint on your index finger. Put the tip of your finger on the rice and measure up to your knuckle with the water.
put the lid on (even better if it's a clear lid) and bring it to the boil.
Then turn it down as low as you possibly can - only barely simmering, and cook for 10 mins long grain rice, or about 12 mins basmati rice (with the lid on). Try not to take the lid off too often as you are steaming the rice and don't want to lose the steam.
When finished, test it, it should retain a wee bit of bite and not be mushy. Fluff with a fork.
If that fails, try Uncle Bens - it appears foolproof!
1 cup rice to 2 cups water. You can't halve it though.
Boil up the 2 cups of water with a pinch of salt and a tsp of butter if you want. When it's reached a boil add the rice, stir and turn it down to a low simmer. LEAVE THE LID ON until you see steam vent holes in the rice and you are sure the water is nearly gone. Then it's safe to take a peak but don't stir it, that's what makes it gloopy.
My method of cooking rice ?
1. measure rice into saucepan
2. add water and salt
3. get DH to cook the rest as I can't cook rice to save my life
Hope it was nice anyway !
Thanks for your help everyone
(Thanks Saph for your help too :thumb: )
