I've agreed to put on a lunch party for my step-Dad's birthday in 2 weeks time. It's not on a huge scale only for 8 but I thought about doing a buffet as I don't have the room for 8 to all sit down.

When I've done something like this before I usually just roast a couple of chickens with lemon, garlic and onion, do a potato salad and a couple of other salads and serve it with fresh bread. I've done this several times recently so want to do something different. Prep time not really a problem as it's a Sunday !

I'd thought about maybe doing more picky food but with salads etc to make it more of a meal IYSWIM. Any thoughts ??

What about a burrito buffet? You could have a selection of meat - ie, grilled chicken and steak, sliced.

At the head of the table lay the burritos out, then lay out a line of fillings. Meat, onions, peppers, black beans, rice, sour cream etc. Lots of napkins and everyone rolls their own burrito.

You could do it with a salad too. Not sure what you'd do for desert though.

Probably a bit late to this but... I also have a problem with room to eat for more than 4 and usually make a big pan of chilli and serve with rice or baked potatos.
If your'e defo doing a buffet, then quiche, pizza, nice cheeses, french bread, rice salad, fresh meat, nachos and dips

Thanks for all the ideas girls - you weren't too late Sashy as it's tomorrow  but there now maybe a few more people coming

LPP I'm loving the idea of the burrito buffet - am def storing that idea away for another time. I'd use it tomorrow but my Mum doesn't eat anything even vaguely spicey

Ok, so I have decided to do as follows (after spending a small fortune in the M&S food hall yesterday)

Houmous, tortilla chips, olives and mini felafel with drinks beforehand.

Then I'm making a quiche - maybe based on the GF asparagus one but prob with leeks instead as my step-dad doesn't like asparagus.
Marinated chicken thighs
A choice of salads (green, beetroot, 3 bean etc)
Fresh bread and a cheese board

Birthday cake for pud.

My fridge is currently groaning with food but it means that people can just have what they want !
