How do you encourage your baby to sit up, or is it just something they will try on their own. Isabel hasnt even gone on to her side or front yet so I am probably trying to run before we can walk but just wondered if there is anything more I can do with her, as she spends a lot of time on her back (it seems to be where she is happiest, doesnt bode well for her teenage years...) or in her bouncy chair. She does go in her Bumbo but her head is still a bit wobbly.

I used to use my bean bag breast feeding cushion to try and prop them up in a sitting position.

I used to sit Lucy up propping cushions round her, she was quite steady from about 3ish months but didn't sit properly until almost 6 months without support, could sit in a fashion from about 5ish months.

Letting her have tummy time will strengthen her muscles ready for sitting etc.

Also i don't want to sound patronising but they're not supposed to go in a bumbo unless they have very good head control. Its just you said her head is still quite wobbly.

Tell me to feck off if you like.

FECK OFF!

No, only joking, thats what I meant to say - I cant put her in her Bumbo yet. I do try it for a minute every now and again but she is still wobbly so I take her out of it straightaway. I cant leave her in it, she looks like one of them nodding dogs!

Here's one to try,

I used to do 'Row row row your boat' a lot with Conor to encourage him to sit. Basically sit Isabel facing you on the floor, hold her hands and off you go! Conor loved it and as time went on I could feel him getting stronger, moving with me or pushing against me.

PMSL, sorry if i was sticking my oare in!!

Like i said i think tummy time will help because it will encourage her to lift her head up thus strengthening her neck muscles and then she'll be better in the bumbo and then can get better at balancing etc.

How old is she now, i haven't a clue how old anyones babies are now no one has any tickers.

Moffgal, thanks for that, I will give that a go.

Katy, she HATES tummy time with a passion, she screams and screams but I am trying to persevere with it as I know it will help.

Edited to add, she is coming up to 16 weeks now.

Lucy used to hate it too, she would try and lift her head and then get all ratty and rub her face into the floor and start screaming. It didn't take long for her to get the hang of it though, just found this pic of Lu at 16 wks, i can't believe how much she's changed...

Chloe is 7 months and she isn't sitting yet. Sam was by this age so I must admit I worry about it a little, plus she has a little friend two weeks older than her who has been sitting for a while. I am sure it's because I just can't spend as much time with her one-on-one as Sam got which, of course, makes me feel incredibly guilty. I am sure she'll sit up before too long, I just wish she'd get on with it a bit so I can put my guilty feelings aside!

I can't remember what age I started it but I used to have tummy time with P for 10 mins in the morning and 10 mins in the afternoon. She didn't like it at first but I'm afraid I'm an evil mummy and I kept doing it!!

She didn't sit up unaided though until she was 7/8 months as she was quite behind in all things motor related! She didn't crawl until 11.5 months either. She was in her bumbo from 6 months.

Most babies hate tummy time but persevere as it really is supposed to help strengthen their neck muscles.

We used to prop Claire sitting with cushions on the sofa and when she was around 5 months on the floor with cushions around her. She would usually fall over but eventually would manage to stay sitting for a couple of seconds! She sat at around 6 months on her own.

I have started to prop Amy up next to me on the sofa as she loves to sit there and look around for a little while but she has very good head control.

Isabel has always had good head control from birth but since about 3 months, it doesnt appear to have gotten any better, so I am keen now to try and help her along a bit. I will definately start trying some more tummy time with her!

Del doesn't sit on her bum much, she kneels in a weird way with one leg in front and one behind, a but like doing the splits.

Asda have some cloth books called 'Tummy Time' they are only a couple of quid.

My friend brought one of those round the other day, they were really good about £4 I think.

Emma would sit on the couch, I'd kneel in front of her & we'd look at books together. You mentioned her not being interested in rolling from her side - Em didn't roll until she was 9months old! but was sitting at 5months.

I do this with Cerys and she loves it too. I also sit her on my lap and prop her up with her hands. She leans quite a way forward but she gets better all the time. When she's sitting in her bouncy chair she quite often leans forward as though she's trying to sit up.
