View Full Version : Interesting information for those of you who have a Mirena
Some of you may or may not recall I have been bleeding like a stuck pig  for ages, several months, with only a few days break.
I'd put it down to peri menopause.
However, have been back to the Dr, and have found my FSH is 4, which is actually very good (could still technically do IVF on it :faint: ).
They want to rule out an infection, however, the nurse (who is a family planning specialist) and also the Dr seem to think it;s 90% certain it's due to the Mirena running out of juice (hormones), and that it needs to be removed and replaced.
I had a swab yesterday so we shall see, but I didn't realise this could be a symptom!
HTH someone.
Minky x
Thanks for the info..
Mine is stuck, its strings have wrapped themselves around it! So a trip to the hospital to do it!
:zombie: Booh!
I am dreading it, will you be given a GA?
The nurse told me this clinic is the referral clinic for anyone who has had issues with it being inserted. I found it excruciating, and she recommended I go to this place, apparently there is one Dr who does nothing else (God forbid!). It's in Teddington if that's any use to you.

I have had mine for just over 5 years, am getting it taken out tomorrow! Am dreading it, have got a longer appt as I have whipped myself up into a bit of a frenzy about gettting it removed. I was wondering if they will do it under a local? I know they insert them under a local quite a lot so am hoping they might be able to do the same for removal?
FWIW I have had more and more symptoms as the time as gone on, but never a full on period or anything more than a little bit of pink spotting tbh. Its more the period pain thats back for me :(

Having it removed is so much easier than having it put in. Its literally over in seconds

Holly it should (as long as wires there) be much easier getting it out than in - it just folds up like an umbrella.
Minky how old is yours? I worry than one day down the line I could potentially mate and not know it's run out of juice
I've had it for a bit over 4 years, had it put in December 2007, and it's been haywire for quite a few months now so certainly hasn't lasted five years...

I agree
Your periods will come back or get heavier before the contraceptive effect fades. I've had mine 5 years and the past year I've noticed some hormonal changes as the hormones have become less strong, I suppose.
Having them out is pain free IME.
I had mine replaced today under GA because they couldn't get the to strings. I am hoping that as it's a replacement I won't bleed for more than a day or so and I'll have no periods, as before...anyone got any experience of symptoms after straight replacement?

I had mine replaced a few months ago. Was dreading it, as having it in was awful (wasn't warned it might be and hadn't taken any painkillers).
However, the whole thing was fine. I had dosed up on both paracetemol and ibuprofen beforehand, as I was so apprehensive, but it was over in a jiffy and nothing like as painful as having it put in the first time.
I also only bled slightly that same day - just used one small sanitary towel - and nothing else since, which was great too!
All in all, a good experience. Hope it's the same for those of you worried about removal x
ooh that sounds positive, Daisy, I hope it's the same for me - I can't see why it wouldn't be :)

Re having it removed. It's no biggy at all. I removed my copper one myself last week. Few seconds and no pain at all!

I have my appointment next week to have an x-ray done to see if they can find mine - they couldn't find it on an ultrasound or with a camera inserted inside me so it has either dropped out without me knowing it or it is has migrated north!
As soon as it is found or not as the case may be, I will be having another one put in straight away as they have put me on the mini pill in the meantime and those are playing havoc with my body (and my skin!!) and my boobs are so sore (am hoping that is the pill - have avoided testing as I don't think I am up the duff.
