I've got an appointment to seem my GP later about my pregnancy. Just wondered what I should expect and if there are any questions I should be asking?

Don't get too excited about it, I remember I was quite deflated after my first appt - they didn't check or do anything (not even a pg test) and just told me to make a mw appt for about 9 / 10 weeks I think... even the first mw appt was form filling I think

At mine, she just asked whether I'd actually tested - I said yes, 5 times (or whatever it was!) and she said there was no point her doing a test and I was definitely pg. She asked about dates (last period etc), I had those written down (I knew ov date too but she just went by the first day of last period), she put the info into the computer and gave me a due date and booked me in for around 9 weeks pg with the midwife (or she told me to book it with reception at least). She may have taken blood pressure and I think she mentioned what to eat and what not to eat and asked if I drank and mentioned caffeine. She sent me away with a pack of leaflets and a big NHS pregnancy book that gives lots of info and contains caffeine quantities etc etc so that was handy. It was nice to know I was all booked in with the midwife too.
I think I asked some questions at my 9 wk midwife appt - drinking, hair dying, flu jab etc. It's a good idea to write anything down you might want to ask as if you are anything like me, your mind goes blank!

Usually just some form filling for the doctor... They will send off so you get a scan (if you get a 12 week scan in your area, this is one thing to ask, I think it's called a nuchal scan) & will advise you to book to see you midwife when you are between 8-10 weeks. They'll also ask you what hospital you want your care to be under.
theyll go through your medical history to check any medication you're on eg for me advice about my thyroid meds and asthma meds. Again you may have questions on this, my main questions are about anti-histimines in pregnancy as I get such bad hay fever.
theyll probably give you some print outs about the food and medicines you should avoid etc.
you could possibly ask if they could provide you with a birth - 5 book but I think that's something you get from the mw.
also ask about applying for your exception card so that you get free prescriptions.
only other thing I can think of is advise about telling work... Again I think this is more something a mw covers because it's not until the 20 something week you need a matB1 form.
Don't expect it to be a big momentous occasion! Ime it goes like this:
Gp: so what can I do for you?
Me: I'm pregnant.
Gp: ok(taps on computer) last period?, here's some leaflets and you midwife appointment should be through in a couple of weeks.
Me: thanks, bye.
Most q&a are dealt with at the m/w appointments.

They do very little at the first GP & midwife appointments. Round here, the gp simply registers your pregnancy and this generates you first Midwife's appointment a few weeks later, where you fill in lots of forms. The forms then trigger your scan & test dates. At your MW apponintment you should be told a little more about who you will need to see when.

Yeah it's a formality I was about 2mins
When did you test?when was lmp? Ok your due on x date book app with mw at reception bye!
First mw app is form filling and bloods and getting formalities sorted for scan
you will prob see gp,have mw booking in,scan then mw again at 16weeks mark.i found that 4 month window a pain but until that app with mw nothing except scan is really that much baby Iyswim!

At least I'm prepared - and I'll come back and tell you all about it hehe
Mine was a waste of time too. He just said "are you keeping it?" I said yes and he said the midwife will be in touch!

Well had the appoinment last night! I was fully prepared for her to be flippant, and I have to say I got a mixed bag of excited and realistic vibes from her. Once I told her I was pregnant the first thing she asked was whether it was a good thing. I said of course and then she congratulated me which was nice. She then asked about LMP and worked out due dates, she was surprised I'd gone to see her so soon (I told her I like to be efficient!). She said as it's so early try to keep it to ourselves rather than tell people straight away and then goes on to say 1 in 6 pregnancies ends in miscarriage. Lovely thanks for that. Apart from that the rest was quite positive, she took my blood pressure, height and weight and worked out BMI. Gave me the number for the midwife and told me she would see me at 10 weeks. AGES away!
Oh and she also asked how long we'd been trying, once I said only a month she was super shocked and said DH must have strong swimmers (He was chuffed with that comment LOL!)
Anyway, wasn't too bad thankfully! :ellie:
