View Full Version : Its going to be an interesting day....
....we're forecast winds of 75mph this afternoon (some areas are forecast 100mph), schools are closing early, train speeds reduced, trucks and buses advised not to travel, bridges closed...
I was going shopping, but maybe not....

Take care, I faced a gust of wind (nowhere near that speed) yesterday with the pram and it was scary.

90mph here. Schools shut. Dh has made it to work but am worried about him getting home - pleased that the kids and I can have a duvet day though! I work for the local authority so they can hardly be anything but understanding since they have shut the schools.

Hope everyone stays safe , I'm a bit annoyed as we have been forecast 80mph winds here and schools are still open and I do find driving in these winds v scary that and I also have to take DS with me and wait on the playground in this weather

Closed here. OH stayed in Glasgow last night so he didn't have to drive through this morning. No idea if he will stay or come home. He might do a very long day then come home late when it all blows over (geddit?)
School closing at lunchtime, though outside my house just now it is completely still! But meant to be really bad this afternoon. I am sooooo hoping DH can get home from Glasgow tonight, it doesn't take much for Scotrail to cancel trains :sigh: We have a painted coming in the morning and I need to get all the furniture moved etc, dont' want to do it on my own!

Nice lazy morning for us as I read on twitter when I woke up that the school were closed so just rolled back over and snuggled under my cozy duvet  Need to get out and move all the toys in the garden and secure the trampoline somehow, then go out for milk before we can lock ourselves in the house and hopefully watch christmas movies loudly to drown out the wind!

Batten down the hatches everyone. Stay safe Scottish Damsels.
Oh and Noo Noo, if you get the wind behind you it could be the quickest 3 miles you've ever run :teehee:
Its OK here at the moment - wet and windy but nothing extraordinary. Its much warmer and the rain has cleared the left over ice/snow from the weekend that was tricky yesterday.
Am kicking myself as I wanted to put some stuff in the garage, but have lost the keys.....

Howling a gale and bucketing rain here,, but that's nothing particularly unusual, maybe more rain than normal. All schools open but a lot of ferries off. Haven't seen a plane at all today (I live near the airport). Utterly vile but I think we are not getting it as bad as other areas of Scotland, or perhaps we are more accustomed to it. It hasn't got light yet though, it's so gloomy outside.
D x
Can I take my last post back - its truly wet and wild now - hail and rain coming in horizontally in sheets.....
Did find the garage keys but in the few minutes it took to put stuff away, I was soaked through....
Not sure how I get DD1 back from school - the others are quite close but she has a 25 minute walk....

Her dh is due to fly home this evening from work she has told him he better get first flight or he will be sleeping in the airport as trains etc past carlisle are apparently all grounded from what she said
Its windy in brum but not that bad-ds is at nursery but I will probably go get him a bit earlier incase it gets much worse
Take care

Also, make sure you know where your torches, candles, etc are. This kind of weather brings down branches on power lines.

Well I went to work in Cumbernauld, was told to make sure I was home by 12pm and had the scariest drive home ever up the M80, really gusty and no visibility at some points as there was so much water everywhere. Not good. Safe at home now with Mr G and the cats :thumb:

Oh Gem that is so scary :higgies: glad you're safe and sound now.
I was just reading Dams' post and thinking, I don't think we have any candles :puzzled: we have tealights and scented candles but no real proper ones, nor good torches either :happyno:

Eek Bop - have you got her home yet? Our schools never opened, all council offices have now been closed so staff can get home safely. So much for tying my trampoline down, didn't last long and this is apparantly only the calm before the storm :brainache: I don't mind if the trampoline is lost / broken what I'm more worried about is if it hits cars and I'm made to fork out for the damage - lots of neighbours park in the street beside my garden.

I was thinking that :teehee: But seriously, take care!
The schools are closing at 12.30; my neighbour is getting our High School kids and I'm getting the Primary School ones since neither of us can be in two places at once!
I'm thinking if this isn't the worst, I'm not looking forward to later - I don't think our back fence will make it - its already bending over significantly.
Current police advice is NO TRAVEL between 2 and 9pm today.....

No way Gem - all NLC offices are closed according to twitter and some of my colleagues on fb so I can't see how they expect your colleagues to stay put! I'd be getting home sharpish if I was them or they might end up spending the night there

It is getting a tad blowy here too - I was just wondering if it was possible for the wind to actually blow in my office window.
I've been sent home now, but we have to work from home :yeahright:
thankfully a friend is getting the boys from school when it closes at 1pm. I do feel a bit guilty about that, its now very heavy rain/sleet and the gusts are horrendous.
I'm not sure *when* it'll be safe for me to go and get them though ...
DH is on the Ayrshire coast and they have to stay inside and listen out for tannoy announcements! He is on a work night out so plans to stay down there til its safe to come home.
We've lost one of the garage ridge tiles - lots of our boxed stuff is stored in the garage so I guess its all going to get wet :(
At least its a rented house so fixing it isn't our problem....
Kids all home safe, but DH is staying at work until the worst is past - could be a late night as its recommended not to travel until 9pm.

I think it's just arriving here now. Was a bit blowy first thing, then got better, but it has suddenly got dark and scarily windy. Just run out and put the toys in the garden away.
No word of schools closing early though.
DH is currently predicting a late night at work sorting out what's happening with buses.
I'm wondering if Beavers is going to get cancelled, DS2 is supposed to be getting invested tonight but I can't see them going ahead if the wind gets worse.

It was an interesting run but I'm back in one piece! A reasonable time too - very hard going on the way out but I quite literally flew on the way back!!!
The Christmas Lights in Aberdeen have blown down

I just had an interesting experience - tried to reverse my car into a parking spot and a gust actually took it forward instead! Bit scary actually but I have to go out again as DS is at his piano lesson and I need to go get him ( I don't want him walking back in this) - after that its doors shut.

:brainache: I'm glad that I decided it would be mad to walk into town today just for my M&S £10 meal!!! I am wondering if DD's Girls Brigade Christmas party will be cancelled.
Its really windy here and I'm in the south east. There are already 3 trees down locally and I'm waiting to hear if the school play tonight is going to be cancelled.
Our lights keep flickering so I doubt it will be long before we are in darkness.
Thinking ahead I have put jacket potatoes in the fire for DH and I later tonight...
Oh and as I type just had a text from a parent to say she has been sat still in her car on the M25 for 45 mins....
Stay safe everyone x

Well, how odd. After this morning's post about gales and wind, just before lunchtime the rain suddenly stopped and the sun even came out briefly AND the wind stopped.
Went into town this afternoon and it was most pleasant (for Orkney in December). I think we must be in the eye of the storm, it's almost still outside (which is unusual in itself) and it's only raining occasionally.,
Hope everyone else is doing fine. OMG about the lights in Union Street.

It's really blowy in Northumberland now, DH saw our (emptied today) wheelie bin actually fly down the street and hit our neighbour's car
Our house is slightly set forward so the wind catches it and whistles around it, I hate that noise.

OK, I take it back about saying we were peaceful in the eye of the storm. It hit us about 3/4 of an hour ago, sounded like a jet engine overhead. Waves in toilet again. Haven't heard those for ages and a pal of mine has just posted on FB that her neighbours shed has just landed on her car.
