View Full Version : Bike Seat for a toddler
I'm buying a bike rack for the car tomorrow and a bike for me. DD is almost three but quite petite. I will weigh her tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone could recommend a bike seat for her.
At the local woods you can hire a trailer for £5.99 for two hours. We're off to Center Parcs in July. I've just read you can only hire a trailer if you hire a bike too. We don't have much storage space so I don't want to buy the trailer type.
Thank you!
Have a look at the hamax range.
I have a rear mounted dd2 rides about in quite happily.
We have a Hamax seat too, just the bog standard one from Halfords - you can get one that reclines but not worth it for us. Have used it for both kids from 6 months, they go up to 48lbs child-weight so you'll get loads of use out of it.
I have a Bellelli one (something like this (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_25 8207_langId_-1_categoryId_165476)) which Ben is really comfy in and he loves going on bike rides.
ATM he weighs about 14 kg and there's still plenty of room left for him. I'm glad we got it - we've had loads more use out of it then I ever thought we might.
Thank you, We are going to buy our car rack from Rutland Cycles (http://www.rutlandcycling.com/c/802/Child-Seats.html) so I will see what they have in their shop.
They've got one of the best selections I've seen in ages - you'll be spoiled for choice!
I'm not sure they'll have the all at the site we are going to but I'm sure they can get me one.

We have the co-pilot limo, it is an Ozzy make and is fabulous. It is very stable and has a arm that comes over the top to help secure the toddler. It also reclines a teeny bit which is very handy as both of mine always fall asleep on the back and this stops their heads flopping forward.

We used a weeride until recently with Abigail. An absolute godsend - she loved it in there & was really happy - even going to sleep comfortably. But she's very big & outgrew the foot rests (size 10 feet) around 3yr so we bought a simple saddle style front seat. Her balance is good & she's happy with this. She would never go in a childs seat behind me, so the front seat style suits us both - more stable/My arms around her/I can see what she's doing etc.
Weeride: http://www.weerideuk.co.uk/ great for 1+ (they feel secure infront, can see where they're going & can sleep on the padded tray without flopping around as happens on some rear seats).
Saddle: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Leco-Tube-Front-Child-Seat/dp/B002ANCDV4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304284052&sr=8-1 absolutely fine for a 3 yr old IMO.

I looked at the saddle one but the reviews are quite mixed. Do you have your Wee Rider and if so, would you want to sell it?

Personally I think trailers are hard work to pull, so we had a seat that fitted on the back. The important thing for us was that it was easy to remove so that OH could swap it onto his bike if we were all out together. It saw us happily through 3 children.
I love that the oldest two ride independantly now, and my youngest is on a tag-along, and she peddles, yeah.
I'm getting fat, I could do with some hard work. I don't think I want to buy a trailer as we don't have storage. Over winter the bike will need to be stored in the garden with a cover as the shed will be too full of garden furniture. We are really short of space in this house.

The trailers pack really flat we just got one this weekend I have done lots of cycling and it is harder with a trailer but not impossible!! I prefer the trailer to the bike seats we have cos they can fall asleep in it! The seats are more painful to store than the trailer as they are massive and bulky!
Can't fit the weeride on my bike cos I am a sort ar$e and my bike isn't big enough he he!!!
Unless you really are going to do loads of cycling get the cheapest one you can, or ask on freecycle one of our seats is from there the other is from an NCT Nearly New Sale a whopping £3 they are ancient but for the amount of cycling I really do they are fine.
Have used the trailer today to get to the park in the next village and then shoved boys bikes and one of them in it while friend took the other on the back of her bike. Her son is big enough to ride himself! Will consider a trailer bike when DS1 is older. could fit a picnic in trailer too so lots of added benefits imo!!!
