View Full Version : Hello & advice needed - pre-eclampsia
Opprobrium

Hiya!
I'd heard everyone had migrated! Was just passed a link to here so hello everyone! There's a few old familiar names here!!
I saw my MW this morning & she's booked me to go to the hospital this afternoon at 3 with possible pre-eclampsia.
Does anyone have any advice or info on this?? As far as I know, worst case scenario is they induce immediately, next step down is they monitor carefully in the coming days / weeks then maybe induce if necessary, next step down is they say it's not PE & everything's fine - go home! :D that about right?? If it IS PE, what should I expect? There was a thread posted about it on the bag but it seems to have crashed so I can't see the replies!!
Thanks in advance!! And good to see some familiar 'faces' again!! :)

Hi,
Not sure how far along you are but your assessment of the situation sounds about right. Try not to worry, I think the worst case scenario one is pretty unusual and it is more likely that they monitor you very carefully from now on. If they let you go home get yourself to a bookshop and stock up as you may be spending a lot of time in hospital.
Don't forget your notes and your bag just in case.
Take this as a bit of a sign to take it easy and to get everything ready just in case bubs jumps the queue :laff:
Good luck!

Hey there Oppro! Goodness your pregnancy certainly hasn't been easy has it??
I think your assessment is spot on. I remember Lilybett from the bag had high blood pressure and was monitored very closely but went into labour herself. The key as I understand it is to take it as easy as possible to keep the blood pressure down and they will monitor you frequently to see how you are getting on.
All the best - keep us posted.

Hey Lois!
My symptoms at the moment are that my BP has shot up, my hands & wrists, legs & feet & eyes have swollen up, I've got pretty sparklie lights floating around in front of my eyes (I like that though! Feel like I'm in some fairy eutopia or something!!), there's protein in my wee & I'm huffing & puffing & out of breath. I actually feel fine though so didn't really think anything of it till my MW said it all together & rang the hospital! Stupid mare - you'd think the amount of friggin pregnancy books I've been obsessively reading I would have thought of something by now!
That's a point - I've read everything on pg & birth, but nothing on when she's actually born!! SO not ready for this!!! :laff:
Hi spritzer! I'm 36 weeks, 3 days. Not long to go now so I'm not too worried if Bean makes an appearance - she's strong enough now, just wasn't expecting it quite yet!!
:welcome:
Not sure if you'll get this before you leave but wanted to say hello. I just posted on the bag to find out if anyone knew how things were....
Anyway, I had high BP last time round but never had any protein in my wee. It started at 30 weeks so I was monitored closely and started on anti-hypertensive medication. You'll be seen and assessed and depending on how bad your BP is and how much protein is in your wee either kept in to be induced, kept in to be monitored or sent home with instructions for bed rest and regular monitoring. They may start you on some meds but it all depends what they think is up. TBH it wouldn't surprise me if they keep you in/induce you but everything may have settled by the time you get ther.
Can't believe how quickly the time has flown!
will keep my fingers crossed that you get to come home

It does sound like PE, and at 36 weeks I agree with Shamu that you may well be kept in. Try and let us know how you are - otherwise we'll just have to keep our eyes peeled for the announcement :ellie:

I had a section with James at 32 weeks due to Pre-eclampsia. I went in at 31 weeks, and was tried to be stablised till 32. Along with everything, they may give you some methyldopa aswell to lower the blood pressure. The blood pressure itself is not the only thing they'll keep an eye on, but regular tests for your livers/kidneys. they seemed to be obsessed with epigastric pain too. if you don't feel too bad, you're probably not too bad yet :) From what I remember anyway! (almost 2 years ago now, and I was unconscious for a bit so don't remember all that much!).
They'll monitor you for a while afterwards, as in some cases it can take a while for the blood pressure to go down again after you've given birth. With garden variety PE, it WILL go down, so it's not really anything you should worry about.

Yup I did, I replied on la Bag, when Polly P Pmed me.
HI
I had PE and was admitted to hospital at 36 +1, they tried to stabilise my blood pressure with drugs (make you really really tired) and then because they couldn't do that they agreed to induce me, but Katie made an appearance shortly after they talked me through the induction process. :)
Things you haven't mentioned that you might like to know. They may test your blood a lot, mine was tested on a daily basis between 36+1 and 37 weeks (when Katie was born) and also once after to check everything was going back to normal.
Also, you'll be pleased to hear, they encourage you to have an epidural as pain relief during labour as it reduces your blood pressure. I remember reading that you wanted an epidural I think?)
They can't force you into hospital if you really don't want to go, but they like you to go in and get mointored everyday.
Also be prepared for wee measuring (intake, output charts and all!).
And the best bit was getting monitored twice daily and hearing Katie kicking about in the womb - lovely. :)
Can't think of anything else at the moment, good luck. I think you'll be meeting your little girl soon. :)

Bit late to this as well...hope the check went ok and that you do see these messages.
I got admitted in hospital at 34+5 from the midwife ap with protein in wee and weigth gain, headaches, pain at the top of my bump, swollen face and ankles, raised bp (can't remember what it was though) bloods came back that I had pre-eclampsia. Amitted and put onto beta blockers to reduce bp, had scans and obs done all the time.
They ketped baby cooking till 36+5 and I was induce as my fluid levels was very low. Baby come out all fine and no probelms at all. So as long as they have found it and keeping a eye on you then all is ok.

Hi Dotty, I bet you dont leave that hospital without a baby :laff: Thats what happened to me, once you get one of those little bands on your wrist, you aint leaving with a bump :laff:
If they induce you, good luck, hope it all goes well (and my tip, ask for an epidural, I never did and will rue the day forever  )

Hi
Lovely to see you hear although I have to admit to lurking a bit on TMT to see how your pregnancy was going. I was admitted to hospital with PE at 37 weeks and I was gutted because I didn't want to stay in but it was the best thing for me and G particularly as I went into labour shortly after being admitted
You are in safe hands and that is the best thing for you and Bubs. Hope you are feeling ok, PE is more common than you realise :)
Hope you don't mind me updating the girls on May Mummies in HB? They've been askign after you ;-)
I think you're going to be an April mummy :D and the first Damsel baby (well, unless Andie beats you to it) :ellie:
Take care and rest (as much as you can in those icky antenatal wards)
