 Just realised that as a Royal Mail employee, I can become a costco member.
However, the membership is £25 per year.
I do have room to store stuff if I bulk buy. Probably wouldn't bother with electricals - not a gadgetaholic
Is anybody a Costco fan?

DH goes and every now and again he'll get a good deal but sometimes once you've added the VAT onto things they're no cheaper than in the shops usually.
For instance he came back yesterday with 2 boxes of wetwipes they cost him £6.50 + VAT for 6 packs of pampers wipes, and i bought a box from savers last week the same size for £5.99 only a small saving on my part but still cheaper than costco.
He tends to buy a fair bit of meat from there and we have birthday cakes from there as well as they're only £9  and personalised too  We've had some lovely cakes for parties etc too.

I don't think so. I went to the one near Star City in Brum and thought it was pants. I thought Makro was miles better and free.

What about everyday stuff like bog roll, washing powder, cat food, tinned foods etc?
Are they any cheaper?

Just had a quick look at Makro site - it's miles away from us.

We use it a bit.
They do a deal every year where it's £12 (or thereabouts) for 60 toilet rolls which, while not very glamorous, is a very very good deal.
They also stock some good American toys that you can't get elsewhere. There's lots of kids books too.
We also buy huge bits of salmon for £6 that we cut into 10-12 fillets.
It's also good for parties and Christmas when you need to buy bigger quantities of food.

Depends really, I never thought it was that much cheaper to be honest. But other people might say otherwise!

we go abit, we get our dog food from there, some bits you can save on but its the same no matter where you go. The bread is good and not bad priced either, the birthday cakes are brill and very nice too!! We got most my family cards too and they go over loads, they like the food.
We also visit JTF which if you have on near and you can get in are good, we find makro to be expensive or if they have something we want then they dont have it in!

......:puzzled: i'm still undecided whether the £25 membership fee is worth it.
I'm only interested in bulk buying the essentials, then I can shop locally for the fresh stuff.

I find Costco a bit expensive - prefer Makro which I still don't think is cheap but have always found that in Makro you don't have to buy so much bulk especially food wise - also Costco does not sell the only brand of cat food that our cats will eat!
But their £9 cakes are great though!!

i didnt think we paid £25 so i looked when we went yesterday and as we are trade we only pay £20.
I agree the cakes are great and the freebies you get to try are great too.

I think you can make pretty big savings on large electrical items so if you're planning on making some big electrical purchases (tvs, dvds, stero's, fridges etc) in the next 12 months then yes the fee might be worth while.
As for everyday things, i think tbh that supermarkets are cheaper than they used to be these days and that you don't make much of a saving if you buy in bulk, try telling that to my Dh though, came home Thursday with a million andrex loo rolls, 2 crates of evian and enough chocolate to start our own factory

I get my coffee, washing powder, fabric softener, loo rolls, kitchen rolls and dog food from Costco. I also get minced beef, chicken fillets and pork fillets and stock the freezer. I think it works out cheaper but you really do need the room to store it all and a big freezer.

.
My mum uses it. And the toilet rolls deal has just been on!!!
Some of the stuff is cheaper and some isnt. But I would say its worth it. We get toilet roll, boxed tissues, large jars of Skippy peanut butter and Nutella (cos we use alot!) -
The personalised cakes are great!!
Mum gets her washing powder / tablets and dishwasher tablets from there too.
Do you know anyone who is a member? You could go with them as their guest to have a look and see what you think.

:teehee: Oh yes, forgot to mention, you will be horribly tempted to buy GIANT packs of biscuits and cakes.

I think it is worth it for me as I get my cat litter and cat food from there which is much cheaper and in a bigger quantity than the supermarkets. My oldest also loves the trays of HUGE muffins, and I can't recommend the birthday cakes enough, they cost 10 quid and are really really nice, and they are big (think they do christening cakes as well). It depends what you will be buying regularly as it if it is worth splashing out on a card.

Definitely worth it as there are good savings to be made....OH and I have been members for several years now. I find it useful for stuff like multi-packs of nappy sacks, nappies etc. Their kitchen wipes are excellent too - come in big four-pack pots and are great for cleaning up all sorts of stuff! And yes, their birthday cakes are very good too:cakeslice: !
One other thing to mention - Costco has a policy where if you're not satisfied with something you can return it at any time - and they do mean any time. We recently returned a Slendertone belt that OH bought about six years ago and no longer used - and we got a full refund! I think they keep records of all your purchases on file so it doesn't matter if you don't have the receipt.....at least I think that's the way it works!
