View Full Version : Family Trees
Have been talking to my mum and have decided that we are going to research our family tree. My friend is doing hers and has got back to 1800 or something but I'm not having much luck!
Has anyone researched their family tree and have any tips or know of any good website? I am registered on Ancestry.co.uk but that only goes as far as 1901 on the census. To find my great grandad, and make sure I find the right one (I think I may have found him but want to make sure it's the right one) I need a later census.
Also, am having real problems finding out about the Scottish side of my family!
All my grandparents have died so don't even have them to ask. I have my maternal grandparents birth certificates but don't want to go down the wrong track as their seems to be a few people with the same names as their parents!
Thanks in advance

Not an expert on this by any means... but I think that census information is only made available after 100 years, so for example the 1901 information was only made public in 2001, and that would be the latest one available.
Ooh, just did a quick search and that does seems to be the case: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001/pre1901cfs.asp
There's a website called scotland's people which may help with the Scottish side. Family tree tracing seems to be very popular in Scotland and there is quite a lot of information online. It might also be worth registering with genes reunited (parts of the friends reunited website) which seems suite active.

Hello
heres a post I added on someone elses thread about family trees, good luck!
I love doing genealogy, I have traced my mums family tree for her which was fun.
There are loads of great sites around and alot of them are free so you dont have to be forced into paying silly amounts for information.
great sites are:

I am a transcriber for free bmd and have transcribed over 10,000 records which is very rewarding. Also I am a member of the LDS church and we/they are very into family history find your local family history centre here:

You can download free family tree software to make your tree here:

The library is a great source too. Look for old Kellys directories or post office directories or old phone books.
