View Full Version : Your opinions on names please!

Now, I know that this is going to strike some of you as a little weird, but I would be interested in your opinions on some of the names which we are considering for our second child due in January.

Clearly names are a very personal thing and with my DH and I just finding names that the two of us agree on has been ridiculously difficult! (god knows why I married him as we clearly have very different tastes!)

I actually don't want to seek the opinions of close friends and family (especially not family!) as they are a bit too close to home IYSWIM, but bizarrely I would actually find it quite interesting to do a straw poll of pretty much relative strangers on here to see how the names we're considering are perceived!

Also, the name issue (as it has become known in our family!) is an ongoing battle between DH and I. Although we have picked 2 names for girls and 3 names for boys which we more or less agree on, each of us has our favourite and off course opinion is completetely divided! My husband will be really pleased if everyone hates the name that he loves as he delights in trying to be different, so I am secretly hoping that everyone LOVES his favourite as that will really piss him off and might make him come round to my way of thinking!

Anyway, we don't know if it's a boy or a girl so for girls we have:

Madeleine Ruby or Florence katy

For boys we have
Finlay Edward, Lucas George or George Daniel

Give me your favourite for each sex and am paticularly interested if there is one that you don't like! Feel free to be really honest with me, I'm pretty thick skinned and I really won't be offended at all, especially if I should ever meet any of you in person!!

I like them all except Lucas (sorry any Lucas mummies, no offence meant) but my faves are Madelaine and Finlay.

I prefer Madeline Ruby for the girls.

For the boys, Finlay Edward or George Daniel - not keen on Lucas George (makes me think Star Wars). My preferred of the two is George Daniel - I like quite traditional names

HTH

I like Madeline but not Ruby (do like the sound of Madeline Florence though...sorry to be a pest:tongue: )

Finlay Edward for the boys name is cute. Watch out if with your last name though (don't want FEC eg for initials).

Choosing names is a nightmare as you know. Gawd knows what we'll do when we have a 2nd. I spent every night for the whole of my pregnancy looking at baby names books (well it felt like that anyway)...and ended up using my all time favourite name anyway.

Good luck!

Good luck with this one, i'm in exactly the same boat at the min. A DH that has his own very strong views on names, but TBH i think he's just doing it to give me the @rse ache.

Well, i like Madeline Ruby as Ruby is a particular fave of mine and for a blue one i prefer Finlay Edward.

My twin sister is called Madeleine and my DD1 is called Ruby so  Gets my vote!!

For a boy - my nephew is called Finley and I was going to call my son if it was a boy Luca so - those get my vote too! (altho i know you have added an 's' for Lucas which i'm not as keen on so i would go for Finley).

Dont like on George, Edward, Daniel, Florence or Katy (although i love the name Kate)

of the two girls names I like Madeleine best but think it would go better with Kate of Katy rather than Ruby.

Like all your boys names except Lucas but my favorite has to be Finlay Edward

Please don't use Lucas George! too Star wars!

I was thinking the exact same thing! I love Lucas and I love George, but together? :happyno: People will think that you are star wars fans or something!

I love Florence for a girl - very pretty!

Have to agree with using Lucas and George in the same name - although I do love both names!

I love all the names (especially as one of them MAY be one of our names  ) but I do tend to like more traditional names like you've chosen that more modern ones.

It's an absolute nightmare choosing names - ours are done now THANK GOD, even though we had a wobble (Well I did) last week, I've decided and that's it!

Good luck!

I love the name Madeleine but prefer it spelt Madeline (prob as a friend of mine is spelt that way) - I quite like Florence and if I had a girl would use it as a middle name probably as it was the name of both of my nans. It could be shortened to Florrie which I think is pretty (alth my nan was shortened to Flo)

For boys name I like George the best as a first name - Daniel as a middle sounds okay, I like Daniel as a first name too.

I am not keen on Finlay or Lucas particulary.

Madeleine Ruby was going to be our baby's name so I really like it. I was a bit worried about how popular it would be though, there are 2 little madeleines and 3 rubys that we know now, plus another Madelaine Ruby and another 2 pg women we know have said they are favourites.

I know a couple of Fin/Finn/Finlays but i do like it, not sure it goes as well with Edward as it does with George though. I really really like Lucas but agree that Lucas George is a bit Star Wars!:swfight:

I love both your choices for a girl with a slight preference for Florence.
For a boy, I prefer Finlay Edward. I also like Daniel and Lucas, but am not keen on George.

Well I was keeping it a secret, but my baby boy is going to be called Finlay George and I love it!

I do like Ruby a lot, but don't know if it bothers you but Ruby has been our hospitals number one name by miles for months!

See i'm soooo :hissyfit: about this but I loved the name Ruby so much when i first thought of it that I am SO pleased i named her it, as i still love it now 3 years later..... Guess a bit different if its going to be a second name though, huh?

I love Madeleine, it would have been on my list but a good friend has a daughter named this so it wasn't an option. Love Ruby too.

Not madly keen on any of the boys names, sorry.

I'm absolutely rubbish at choosing names, it's a good job I'm not having any more children.

PV I was so shocked about it being at the top, I just thought it was a lovely name, but in no way mega popular. I expected maybe Jessica or Ellie or something to be number one, but everytime I go to the Midwife at the hosp, it's still number 1!

Glad you don't regret it though, I worry about that all the time, like what if the name doesn't suit him after a while or I change my mind when he's 6 months old

Sorry for the hijack - hope the thread has helped you come to a decision and not confused you any more!

Well I DID like the name Ruby, but I'm afraid in my area it's definitely 'gone chav'. Sorry.

All the other names are OK. Except Daniel. Taught too many Daniels with behaviour statements.

:happyno: to Florence. Sorry but it reminds me of the "ladees" on Little Britain.

Like all the others though :thumb:

:-( Where do you live Ruby?

Am a bit :teehee: that its your username though, after you've said that

And what are 'behavioural statements' :puzzled: Sorry if thats a dumb question.....

Chicken, am consoling myself that i don't know, neither have i heard of, any 'Leilas' thus far! :thumb:

Like Madeleine, not keen on Ruby...
Love Daniel, not keen on George...

The whole name thing is SOOO hard!! I was convinced Anna was a boy, she was going to be Jesse. I have chosen both the boys bames & I chose Jesse too. When Anna turned out to be a girl, I thought I should give DH a chance at naming one of them! Wish I hadn't now though, I'm not keen on Anna. I still look at her & don't think "Anna"....

ETA - Reason I don't like Ruby is that I went to primary school with a Ruby & she used to pinch me!! I reckon it always affects your view of a name if you know someone with the name!

I dont like the name Madelaine at all. I think it sound like old ladies. Sorry.

Florence is OK but bordering on old lady!

Katy is OK. It's a bit 1980's though.

Ruby is a lovely name.

I think Ruby Florence sounds nice.

I like the names Finlay, George and Daniel.

Don't like Edward at all. It reminds me of a posh old bloke - dont know why cause I dont know any! Sorry.

Billy's middle name is George but that was purely after my Grandad. I do like it though.

Lucas is a bit 'different country' IYSWIM?

Finlay George or Finlay Daniel I think sound nice.

I like Florence & Katy
and George, I like Edward too
not keen on the others.
IRL I hear a lot of Finlay's being shouted, and tbh George seems quite popular too.
My Grandma was called Florence, so maybe that is why I like it?
