Posted on JT's thread on LIG and it got me thinking. After I had P MIL said that she wished I had had a 3 or 4D scan as she thought they were amazing. My first reaction was, well I wouldn't have paid for it and then my second was, I didn't want one. To me, finding out the sex is a necessity (I said to ME before anyone jumps on me!!) but tbh the whole surprise element of the birth is finding out what the baby looks like, who he/she looks like etc and I feel this would be taken away if you can see every feature before they are born.

I'm dreading her offering to pay for one this time, although maybe I could have it done for posterity but not look while they are doing it LOL!!!

What are your thoughts??

I have to say that they don't do anything for me tbh. Having seen babies of all gestations, I think they look quite different at 30 weeks to term so I'm not sure it would "spoil" things. But someone who's actually had one will probably answer things better than I can ;-)

I had one done, I would never have paid for a proper one but I had it done at The Baby Show as I happened to be right at the right stage for it and it only cost me something like £25 for a 10 mins scan so I didnt think it was too bad. It was amazing really to see, I could see Isabel yawning and holding her hands to her face, it really was a nice experience.

I wanted one with Eliza but P talked me out of it, and this time round he wants one but I just think if we did not have one with Eliza then it would seem mean to have one with this baby, does that make sense??

Maybe you could say that Lois if she offers, just say well I did not get one of P so I dont think its fair to have one this time round???

I think that will be my argument Adele - I don't think it's fair to have it for one and not the other. Superman doesn't like the idea either which is great as I have back up!!!

If she wants to spend £50-100 then she can buy me some maternity clothes LOL!!!

I would have loved to have had one done but we couldnt afford to and DH thought the cost was silly. We didn't even get a 20 wk scan so we didn't know what sex to expect and although i REALLY wanted to know it was lovely to have a surprise, especially as we were both expecting a boy

I wouldn't have one done next time round as like others have said i'd feel bad for not having one done with Lucy. Our hospital has changed its policy (again) though and they now do 20 wk scans so IF i ever get pregnant again i'll hopefully be able to tell the sex :ellie:

We had one done with this baby (didn't have one with Dixie). TBH, whilst I thought it was amazing to see a 'face' and not just a black and white picture, I don't think I'll really appreciate having it done until the baby is born and I can compare the real baby with the pictures IYSWIM? but then again, if the baby looks nothing like the pictures, I'll think that they just gave me pictures of a pretend baby :laff:

I said IF because we're not sure if we're going to have any more now.

I had a 4D scan, and I really am so glad I did. The pics are honestly amazing, and I felt it gave me an opportunity to really bond with this thing growing inside me as a baby.

The main reason we decided ot have one was that DH was finding it hard ot get his head round the whole thing (bit easier when you're lugging a bump round the whole time! :laff: ), but now I relaly am glad I had it for me.

My own pics and those I've seen of others babies honestly don't look like the baby at full gestation (Joanna's is defo one example where I remember the scan pics and also what Isabel looks like now she's here) - it is an 'en route' pic.

I wouldn't hesitate for a minute if someone else were paying!!

Thats exactly why I didn't get one done. We found out the sex so that element of surprise was gone and I didn't want the surprise of finding out what she looks like before she came out. Stick to your guns honey!!!

Hi lois!

I was going to post on your other thread re the sex issue thing, and I will do later, but one of the things that really helped me to come to terms with the fact that I'm having a boy was a 3d/4d scan.

I had one with H and tbh, they really really don't look THAT much like their scan piccie - certainly you wouldn't be able to pick them out of a line up!

With the 3d/4d scan that I had three weeks ago with Jack (and they told me he was a boy), actually seeing HIM AS A BABY and not a bean (which is what they look like on the other scan - let's be frank!!)

He suddenly became "my baby" - actually seeing him as a proper baby iyswim, and it honestly didn't matter about gender - he was just my baby!!

It was the most cathartic thing I could possibly have done and had really helped me accept and now look forward to having a baby boy!!!!!

But that's just my experience hon - I would say it's definitely worth it.
