View Full Version : Tummy Time?
I heave read so many time it is important for babaies to spend time on their tummies but Jack hates it and won't even last 2 minuites without getting really upset. So how can I encourage tummy time for him?

I never did it, Biba, except for a few times and she didn't like it either. I'm not sure why they do say it's important - is it something to do with getting them to crawl? If so, well Niamh was crawling at just under 8 months so no problems there.

Tummy time is apparently to help them strengthen their neck and head control etc and stop the flat head syndrome. The physio in hospital told me that they get a lot of referrals now because children arent learning to sit up and walk as early anymore and this is attributed by the fact that we lay our babies on their backs all the time.
Isabel hates it too, my friend manages it with her baby by placing a rolled up towel under her chest to raise her up a bit, but about the only way Isabel will lay on her tummy is on my lap.

It seems a bit cruel and unnecessary to me if they don't like it! It certainly didn't impair Niamh's development of those things in any way - she had good head control from very early, never had a flat head and was sitting up on her own before 5 and a half months. But then I suppose they're all different.
I won't worry too much then. Jack has good head control, his head isn't flat atm and we sit him up on our laps or in his bouncy chair a lot of the time. DD never had tummy time and I always wondered if that was the reason she never crawled, mind you she walked at about 91/2 months as she got frustrated she couldn't get around so maybe it was a good thing.
