View Full Version : How well does your toddler sleep?

I'm just being nosy now... I got the impressions toddlers were pretty good sleepers and now I find they are a pretty mixed bag. Thought I'd be nosy and see how everyone else is getting on... so what goes on in YOUR house at night?

Well, I couldn't pick one of the options, but my toddler sleeps abysmally. He goes to bed lateish (that's not a big problem and partly my choice, as it fits in with our hectic family life, running teenagers around etc.) wakes 1-3 times a night and gets up at 7-7.30am.

We're a bit of a mixed bag, she goes through phases

She always goes down well, but she'll go through phases of waking in the night (3am/4am ish) and always ends up with us then, and even when she's in a phase of sleeping right through, she's always an early riser, 6am normally, sometmes she'll sleep until 7am, but I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've had to wake her to get out of the house.

At least we get our evenings to ourselves, and we know to get ourselves to bed early if she's going through one of her little phases

I'm really blessed with Emma as she has always been a fab sleeper

She usually goes out like a light around 7pm and doesnt wake until around 7.30am. Very occasionally she has a bad dream but is usually easily settled and she will even take herself to the loo in the night and go back to bed :lurve:

Emily is generally fine - if she does wake up she usually just wants a drink and goes straight back to sleep as soon as she's had it. That said, it's been a bit hit and miss recently due to acute nappy rash, colds, coughs etc. And we haven't gone into a bed yet (planning to in the next couple of weeks) so no idea how that will affect things.....we shall see, I suppose! She actually enjoys going to bed though and likes her sleep so fingers crossed it'll be OK!

Last night on the other hand was a bit of a trial since she has a cold at the moment - she slept OK but kept coughing in her sleep, and given I wake up at the slightest sound.....well, you get the idea......:zombie:

Early waking is a bit of a mixed bag here - I have more 6am wake-ups than I would really like:shock: (and it was 5.30am the other day - fortunately those seem, touch wood, to be few and far between), but we also have days when she doesn't stir until after 8! Have found she sleeps a lot longer and later since she all but dropped her daytime nap, and she settles better as well - is usually out like a light around 7.30-45!

Can I pick the last three?

 I just realised I can't answer either as we have several of them :sigh:

Del likes company to fall asleep so usually she falls asleep (quite late) on my bed and as I am tired atm I will usually fall asleep too. When DH comes to bed he will carry her to her room where she will stay for anything from 10 minutes to 4 hours. She doesn't tend to wake me up or anything so I tend to let it go, I'd rather be asleep than battling with getting her to her own room at 4am. I think the cats sleep in her bed more than she does

We are option 1 and 5. It's 5 that gets to me the most especially with dark mornings.

Better than option 1 :grin:. She only ever wakes up when she's ill, goes down happily at 7ish waving us away and saying night-night and sleeps through till nearly 8am. I know I'm very lucky . My nights are broken by a nearly 4mo though and he's proving to be slightly more challenging on the sleep front than his sister was at the same age :happyno:.

I picked option 1. E goes through phases of not settling in the evening but is generally very good  She isn't fond of early mornings :happyno: which suits me fine  Mind you, her brother is an early riser....

Can I pick all of them

Jack can sometimes take hours to settle, is always up at least once in the night and often wakes early - today was 5.20am :zombie:

Amy goes to bed really well by herself at around 6.30 (unless she has had a nap in the day then its hell) and most often will sleep through till around 6 (which to many would be early but to me is my normal wake up time anyway). But she will occasionally wake in the night, come to me and all she needs is for me to carry her back to bed and she will go back to sleep.

I can't pick just one either...Craig is pretty good about going to bed on his own, but wakes up a lot during the night needing a mummy hug to get back to sleep and is up most days at around 5:30am (this morning slightly earlier!)

Option 1, we're blessed with a good sleeper. Bound to be trouble next time though...

It's a bit of a mix between the first and last answer. Will goes down like a dream every night (between 7-8pm) and we are very rarely woken in the night. However, he has got into a habit of waking up screaming his head off at 5.30am on the dot most mornings. We've gone from bringing him in with us until our alarm goes off at 7am to simply ignoring him now as, in all honesty, 5.30am is no sensible time to be up in the morning! It does mean that DH and I are awake from 5.30 every morning but I'm hoping that William will soon learn to roll over and go back to sleep when he wakes up at that very unforgiving time!

I voted for option 5 :thumb: . Robbie has always been fab at going to bed and is generally in bed between 6.30 and 7pm (although tonight is in bed already :teehee: ) and was generally up between 6.30 & 7am although recently it can be as early as 4am  when he gets up , goes downstairs and puts the tv on in the playroom :faint: .

I could pick the last three, she goes to sleep OK with me lying next to her but sometimes wakes at 3am, sometimes sleeps till 5am sometimes she comes in our bed. I wish she would go back to 7 - 7!!!

I voted on behalf of my eldest - 7.30-8 girl, mostly doesn't bother us in the night. DD2 is another matter!

A regularly wakes up around 2 or 3 times a night and will more than likely stay awake for a good 2 hours. She does go down 'OK' although takes her an hour or so to drop off and she gets up around 7am, depending on how bad her night has been. If it's been bad, sometimes she sleeps in until 7.30/8am.

I picked one.

Both of mine sleep really and always have done since they were a few weeks old.

I can't remember the last time they woke me up in the night and this morning neither got up until we did at 9am!

Not necessarily, all 3 of mine have been good sleepers - maybe they've inherited the sleepy gene from me

Not sure if a 4yo counts as a toddler but he goes to bed at 8-8:30ish & gets up between 8-9 in the morning although I need to get him up at 7:30ish for nursery weekdays now. My 3 month old has his last feed about 8:30ish, in bed by about 10 and sleeps til 8-9am too - I'm just hoping it continues as I don't cope well without my sleep!

I'm very lucky with Conor in that apart from a few phases he seems to love to sleep.

At the mo his ideal is bed by 7 and up at around 7.15-7.30. He is NOT good if he doesn't get his 12 hours at least.

Ruby is a total gem and I'm dreading the time when we move her to her own bed as a I fear it will totally disrupt her. She sleeps all night, 12 + hours. Very occasionally, like this morning at 4.30 she will cry out but then go back to sleep, or occasionally she wakes early and ends up in with us, but that has only happened a couple of times.

Ooh, not necessarily Mrs B :happyno: Both of mine are fantastically good sleepers :ellie: and I am more grateful than I can express for that.

We have been through phases when DS was ill and when DD moved to her 'big girl' bed but on the whole they are both out like a light at 7.30pm and sleep through till approx 8am. Some mornings I have to literally drag them both out of bed to get DS to nursery on time.

I've gone for option one, though we go through the odd 'phases'. He went into a bed a couple of weeks ago, no problems - then I started using a night light for DS1 last week, and DS2 has since woken through the night and come into our bed.

He hs been warned not to do it tonight, or he will be put back ... we will see.

I wouldn't mind him being in the bed with us if he didn't continually kick me, roll around, adn generally cause havoc.

Well up until 2 months agi, T was a brilliant sleeper, has always gone down at 7 pm - still does and never used to wake up.

Then he got his big bed, and since then more or less, he has woken up every night, most nights twice.

For no apparent reason, he doesn't want anything (milk, drink, wee etc..)..

I really don't know why he wakes and I wish he would stop and go back to being a perfect sleeper again..

Saying that he goes doen well at 7 pm so we do have the evening to ourselves until he wakes, which usually 1st time is around 1 am!!!

I can finally pick 1 :woohoo: Aaron now goes to bed between 6 and 7 (depending if he has napped in the day) and wakes about 7.30 :ellie: a few months ago he would go to bed fine about 7 then be up 2-3 times in the night (usually 11pm and then between 2-4 am) and wake at 5.30 to start the day :zombie: he was a bad sleeper from day 1. This has changed due to him going in a bed and his diet (his untreated coeliacs caused bad sleep problems) also going in his own room has helped as we dont disturb each other

Kenidee was a fab sleeper from 6 weeks she slept 7-7 and has slept well ever since (even tho she went through a phase of getting up early between ages 3-7)

I can't read the whole thread about these fantastic sleepers as it would probably make me ill!

Both of mine still wake us up regularly - the worst being my nearly 5 year old at the moment. The night before last I was up 5 times for one thing or another. They get up early to boot.

I don't think it is anything I have done wrong but have resorted to telling my 4 year old off badly now as honestly I can't do it any more.

Option 1, although M does still wake and ask for milk occasionally - it's down to about once a week now though so I can cope with that

He goes in his room at 7.15 (I would say to bed, but tbh he tends to just play in his room for a bit - he's not disturbing us though now we've taken the musical instruments out), is usually asleep by 8.00 and up for the day sometime between 7 and 8am.

E is a great sleeper thank god. She will go to bed at 7.00 and wake up between 6.30 and 7.30. She still has two naps a day normally 1hr in the AM and 2 in the the PM but sometimes she will sleep for two hours for both. She is generally quite happy to go to bed and will wave and blow kisses as she goes upstairs. The odd time she crys it never lasts long. When she is ill it all goes to pot though!

daniel is generally good in the evening, he goes to sleep around 7.30 and very rarely wakes while we are up. But we fluctuate between sleeping through and getting up somkewhere between 6 and 7 and waking once or twice with coughs, wanting drinks, bad dreams... it does seem to go in phases and at the moment we are in a reasonable one so it isnt too bad but it wont be long before we hit a bad one!

I couldn't vote for any one option as we go through almost every one of them at any given time! We've just come through a hideous phase of ds (age 2.5) waking up at 5/5.30 am every day. I'm just waiting for the next 'phase'. :zombie:

On Wednesday, DD (nearly 5) woke up at 2.30 am to go to the toilet, unfortunately waking DS up at the same time. Neither of them wanted to go back to sleep.

We then had nearly 3 hours of NOBODY in the entire house getting any sleep at all. Eventually, DD and DH fell asleep in our bed, DS fell asleep back in his own bed, and I ended up in DD's bed. It was hell on earth.

I think this thread does show that there is no 'norm' for sleeping, regardless of what anybody says. Every child is different. And really, the people whose children sleep for 12 uninterrupted hours per night are probably really unusual! And I personally hate them

Option 1 here. Pretty much always 12 hours- 6.45pm-am.

It is rare for him to have a daytime sleep these days, but I am not complaining too much as I am awful at getting up during the night. I have a shock coming in the next few weeks!

I voted for the top one but more often that not she DOES end up in our bed, it just doesn't disturb me because i'm already being disturbed my Max  sometimes i'm SO tired from getting up to Max that i don't even notice Lucy has gotten into our bed.

Its a bit of a squish atm in our bed as generally most mornings there are 5 of us in a normal sized double bed, DH, Me, Lucy, Max and the cat

On the whole DD is pretty good, she goes to bed with no problems and usually wakes between 6am and 7.30am.
Sometimes if she is getting ill or unsettled she starts waking in the night or waking early but generally she is good.

I have to say I feel really blessed at the moment.
I voted option #1, but it's been a long time coming. C has always been a dreadful sleeper - since he was tiny. But now he goes down with a song (or 10!) at 7.30ish and doesn't wake till 6.30/7am.
I'm appreciating the full nights sleep while I can

Thanks everyone, I feel a bit better that loads of people are also suffering along with me

I'm finding there is a pattern just now of two nights of horrific no sleep then one nice long good one (presumably cause he is knackered from the two previous nights ).

Maddy sleeps through no problem. Isabelle only started sleeping through 2-3 months ago, but in the last 3 weeks she has disturbed me 3-4 times a night. Sometimes cos shes lost her dummy and sometimes I go in and shes just moaning in her sleep, but very loudly. Shes teething terribly so Im hoping that once the teeth that are bothering her come through I might get a full nights sleep. Ive not had one for about 18 months and Im bloody knackered!!!:zombie:

I am now TRULY depressed that the

"Fine, can't complain, I have evenings to myself and unbroken sleep most nights" has reached 70 percent. 70 percent!!!! MOST nights! Are the other mums of rubbish sleepers just keeping really really quiet? I think this is the most depressing poll I have ever read  :sob:
