View Full Version : Would any of you Damsels be interested in a bake-along?

A bit like a cross between a book group and a knit-along. I know there are a few baking Damsels on here :retrogal:

The idea being we choose a recipe between us per month/fortnight and then make it whenever we've got the time and then take a pic of the results and post ideas for any variations/cooking times etc.

Any takers?

I'd be up for it. I'm crap at cooking/baking so would be good to practice!

Can you give lessons too AG? :laff:

Can I be a part-time member? Helena has a v restrictive diet and so many things aren't allowed. I bake quite a few things for her (lots of biccies mostly) but I'd imagine a lot of the recipes we want to cook won't be OK for her. For instance, she can't have chocolate. :( So, I'd very much like to join, but only when we're cooking something she can eat.

August Girl
16-04-2006, 10:48pm
Oh yeah Spellbound, I can't make pastry at all!

A_a, pf course you can learn, just let somone else make the recipe first and learn from their mistakes :wik:

Red, course you can. If you know of any Helena-friendly recipes for us to try then we could all do them. I'll let this thread run a few days and see if we have any more takers before we decide what to start with.

And of course I'm restricted as everything has to be vegge friendly, but most baking tends to be. :ellie: :ellie:

Well, if we want pastry practice, we could try an apple pie. I've never made pastry, but have detailed instructions from my mum!

Ok Ag , I will have a browse and think of what I fancy. Are we gonna try trying things we haven't done before ?

August Girl
17-04-2006, 09:33pm
Yes, I think so.

I was looking through a Nigella book on Thurs, I think I might have to go back and buy it.

i'm a bit late to this thread but I would love to join in :bunnydance:

A bake-along is a great idea :pie:

Is it just restricted to baking or we up for any recipes? I would be happy to go along with veggie or special diets/requests to suit peoples needs such as redhed's Helena's - I think that would make it more interesting actually because a lot of us will probably end up cooking recipes we wouldn't have thought of trying otherwise.

I've just seen this - I think it's a great idea AG and I'd love to join in please. I'm more than happy to go along with dietry requirements from time to time - I have some cook books on cooking without gluten, dairy etc. so i can even join in the suggestions. I think it will make it more interesting!

Yep count me in.

Re recipes I would really like to make the Chocolate Cake in Nigellas book, it was featured on a programme the other day, I think it is from Nigella Bites, it looks yum! and also I keep threatening to make a Carrot Cake so can that go on the list?

August Girl
18-04-2006, 05:13pm
Is it the Quadruple choc loaf cake Jo? If it is I think I have the recipe in one of my links somewhere. Carrot cake is also good.

I like the look of this too Jaffa Cake (http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~csh33/Cooking/JaffaCake.php)

The Quad choc cake is also on that site.

  Great idea! I'll definitely join in! I can only really bake on weekends though due to work.

I made that quadruple choc cake for valentines day, it was gorgeous! In fact, OH is still craving it, so I'm sure he wouldn't mind me making it again :D

Just seen this thread - I think it's a great idea!! :ellie:

Maybe we could have a savoury recipe each month, and a sweet recipe? All veggie, I guess, so no-one's excluded.

I could make each month's thread a sticky for the duration of the month, if you like :)

redhed
18-04-2006, 07:25pm
I don't think we should try to do Helena-friendly every month - for instance chocolate is out, as well as dairy and a whole host of other stuff. And I wouldn't want to find damsels everywhere being rushed to hospital because of a :choc: deficiency!

Sounds really good ! I can only really cook at the weekends but I do like the idea of one sweet and one savoury recipe. We don't eat alot of cakes and sweet stuff but more than happy to give it a try :D

I suppose we'd have to wait till May so it didn't get confusing? I'm happy to do savoury too, but I'm mainly a cake baker, I'm not great with savoury stuff.

How are we going to choose the recipes? Should we make suggestions (on another thread) and then vote in a poll?

Ah but this means you will get better!

(I'm better at savoury so I'm hoping to improve with the sweet :wik: )

May is good and a poll sounds like the way forward.

We're going to need someone to organise this. August Girl, as it was your excellent idea, would you like to be the host of the Cookalong Club (as I have dubbed it :laff: )?

We'll need two suggestions threads (one for savoury, one for sweet) each month, two polls, then threads about the actual cooking, then two threads to show off people's results. I will create a sub-forum in Food and Drink for it, so it will be easy to keep track of.

Whatja reckon?

ETA: Actually "Club" sounds too cliquey and difficult to get into. How about "Cookalong Challenge"? Or just "Cookalong Group"? Suggestions please!! (It doesn't have to be "Cookalong" anything, so see what you can come up with :) )

How about Kitchen Capers with the month so for eg:

April Kitchen Capers

That way no group/club etc is insinuated and anyone can join at anytime.

I have a suggestion for the savoury one. I have just bought this months BBC Good Food magazine and it has an asparagus and cheese tart on the cover which looks great. If we do it in May, asparagus will be in season then too.

August Girl
20-04-2006, 08:56pm
Been trying to think of a name for it and have failed miserbaly! best I could think of was Bake and Make. I will start the threads so we can get the ideas on there and if a name for it comes about then i can always change it after.

I dont mean to be a pain, or single anyone out or anything, but could we maybe as well as having a savoury veggie meal, have a savoury meat one per month?

I'm just starting with cooking main meals, not really done many before, Im always restricted to the few I know, and as well as learning and trying some new veggie recipes, would really appreciate some new meat ones too.

What are anyone elses thoughts?

I'd be really interested in doing this!! Have to say that I may be a bit of a partimer on the sweet recipe as a) I don't own many cake or sweet making implements and don't really have room for any more tins (if it's muffins or something like cupcakes them i'm fine though!!!) and b) I'm trying so hard to be good and me and sweet things =

But the savoury one - absolutely!!! Off to put my suggestions on the thread now!

I was thinking it might be better to keep main meals to Katkinns weekly thread as it is already going well, and have the monthly ones for something a bit fancier? When I started the cookalong idea I was just thinking more of cakes (my fave!) but then people showed an interest in savoury recipes too such as asparagus tart.

Does that sound OK to everyone else?

Course you can S_A. Forgot to say it has been renamed 'Cookalong Capers' and the suggestion threads have been bumped up.
