Good idea Chealsea . I am longing to get back to the gym but am just too tired at the moment. My gym has a creche too so hopefully it wont be too long after baby arrives I will be able to start backalbeit gently

Sounds like your stomach must be pretty toned , do you do different stomach excersises or are all 300 crunches ?

My tummy is toned, it always has been, you just cant see it with the loose skin from my c-section!! Im working on tightening the skin, but i think it will only go so far, i think a tummy tuck is the only way for me to get mu belly back to how it was

I do different stomach excerises

Just got back from the Gym and i am leaping about like a wally. I love going there to dance and get on the wobble machine. So i did about 30 lengths of the pool at lunch and then was at the gym for an hour this evening on various machines.

Oooh you're going for it Fants! How are you getting on with the wobble machine then?

I've been out for a run tonight, I'm building up gradually though. I was out for about 45 mins, that was about 35 mins of walking 1minute, jogging 4 minutes, then a 10 minute walk at the end to cool down.

I meant to go to the gym this evening, but this afternoon I walked for about 40 mins (up King's Road) in my MBTs and that knackered me. So exercise done, I think! :walking:

My attitude is to exercise when i feel like it and when i do, do as much as i like and not to care if i look like a crazy gal singing on the cross trainer. If i regiment myself, i don't stick to it, instead i am going to adopt Phoebe from Friends ideology and run like a child.

Well I can't go to the gym until September when JJ starts back at playschool. So I am exercising in the house, everyday I do -
30 minutes skipping
30 minutes step aerobics
free weights working all major muscle groups (have two days off from this per week)
about 30 minutes of ab/back exercises

Takes about 2 hours in total - good thing is that the weather has been great so I've been doing everything in the garden whilst JJ is playing.

Blimey, you're motivated! I really struggle to do things like that at home - there always seems to be something I'd rather do. I desperately need to do some weights and/or exercise on the ball at home though, cos I can't get enough time in on weights at the gym.

I did

25 mins on the rummer
15 mins on the stepper
10 mins on the cross trainer

weights for the arms and legs
100 squats
loads of work with the ball

200 situps, my belly really hurts when i start doing these again it feels sore and bruised, i dont know if this is because i did them wrong yesterday or its working

Sounds like you're overdoing it a bit, try to work different areas of your body each day if you're going everyday, or at least work hard one day and just do light stuff the next. Or you could do all your cv one day and all weights the next, on alternate days.

Helloo!

Just got back from work and am shattered. Got my mp3 player through so have been putting songs on that and the plan was to go to the gym tonight. But i am sooo tired, my eyes are blood shot and i think maybe having an ickle sleep might be better for me.

Gemma there was this really interesting thing that i saw on sky a while back. it was part of Extreme makeover and the personal trainer said that around 90% of training that people do at the gym is worthless. He said that he can always tell the women who do step regularly as they have huge muscular thighs. To get a leaner look he said that you should be doing a consistent amount of cardiovascular work in one setting and then working on weigh machines the next session.

Im not going to remember this perfectly but im sure he said you should be say on the treadmill, x trainer or whatever for an hour. not doing short bursts of one machine and short bursts of another. he said about teh weight machines that you have to load the muscle. So when you get to the point where you can really feel the muscle stressing then hold, i do little pulses, and then repeat.

I thought it was really interesting that a lot of us are probably going to the gym and getting little benefit from it. i shall have to do some more reading on it i think, i believe the guys name was Michael Thurmond.

that makes sense fantasseee because there is a girl in my gym who regulars does a step class and then goes straight into aerobics so as you can imagine she is really fir but she has big but really toned thighs, i always wondered why that was.

I have been the gym this pm and managed to 30 mins bike,10 mins x trainer, 5 mins stepper some free weights and sit ups. feeling much better for it.

Really fants, well i sooo dont want huge thigh muscles :happyno:

Being on the treadmill or whatever for a hour, i couldnt stay on there running for that amount of time

I am basically doing what i do when i have a personal trainer session with my PT although i am def going to stay away from the stepper from now, i assumed the stepper toned the bum and the calf muscles

Oh no don't stop if its a set regime that yr PT gave you. i just thought it was interesting as all of us want our gym sessions to be effective, and he gave some excellent pointers as to what you can do to achieve this.

I shall go and see if i can find any info that he has written.

These tips are very similar to what he said, might be worth trying to adhere to.

DO CARDIO LAST
Strength-train before doing any cardiovascular work, says Ken Fitzgerald, owner of Lift Gym in New York. Why? It takes the body about 15 minutes to warm up and start burning fat. So, a 30-minute bike ride is really only burning fat for the last 15 minutes of your workout. But, if you lift weights first, your body is warmed up by the time you hit the bike, and you'll burn fat throughout the entire ride.

VALUE VARIETY
Do the exact same workout every time you hit the gym, and your body will start to adapt to it -- and eventually stop burning as many calories, says Zim. So if you jog one day, try biking or swimming the next. Or, if you weight-train from the shoulders down one day, next time, begin with your legs and work up. The important thing, Zim says, is to keep your body guessing.

TRAIN IN INTERVALS
The best way to burn fat is to work out as hard as you can for as long as you can, says Malick Diop, a trainer at Equinox Gyms in New York. But, if you're just starting to exercise, interval training's your ticket. Two minutes on the treadmill at, say, 7 mph, followed by two minutes at 5 mph, then back to 7 mph (and so on) for 20 to 45 minutes will whittle away pounds and build your endurance. Eventually, you'll be able to extend the high-intensity periods (and decrease the low ones) until your whole workout is done at top speed.

ADD LIGHT WEIGHTS
It's a fact: The more muscle tone you have, the more calories you burn -- even when you're sitting still. So, if you can't seem to find time to weight-train and do your cardio, Zim suggests doing bicep curls and overhead presses holding two- to three-pound weights while you're fast-walking or stair-climbing. This will build muscle tone, helping you shed more fat during your cardio workout than you would without the weights.

Thanxs for that fants im going to do exactley what he has written and see what happens

Especially the whole treadmil at 7mph for 2 mins and then down to 5 ect for 20/45 mins, i cant stay on a treadmill at that speed for more than 20 mins, id love to be able to go on for longer

Yep i did mean that.

I tell you what is amazing for the muscle that makes yr bum pert. Im not sure if you have the thigh machines where you squeeze the bars in to exercise the inner thigh and push them out to do the outer. Well if you do the outer one and instead of just going in and out, put it on 20-25 killos and actually hold when you feel that muscle load. The other day i was doing this and then pulsing, then holding again and OMG i could feel that muscle going mental. My arse isn't too droopy but i'm sure i isolated the pert muscle doing that

Umm, I agree with most things that have been posted but not about Step making your thighs bulky.......unfortunately that is down to genetics and not the exercise. I used to teach Step and at one point taught three classes a day four days a week and never got "bulky" thighs - but on the other hand I know people who's thighs have been made bulky by doing repetitive exercises - eg. if you only do step AND are genetically predispositioned to bulk muscle.

I do a lot of weight training with heavy weights and do a lot of cardio training (skipping is one of the best for me!) and do mini circuits in my garden (good fun for my son too). I find that this gives me a total body workout and really keeps my weight down.........when I am working, I eat around 4000/5000 calories a day just to maintain my weight, at the moment with the amount of exercise I am doing around 3000 is enough......

Make sure you stretch five minutes into the workout and again afterwards. Most gyms have a stretching area with the exercises displayed on the wall. it might sound boring, but if it helps stop the aching then its definitely worth it! :thumb:

Damz do you use a machine to check yr heart rate? What you said above is exactly what youre meant to do. Get yr heart rate in the zone and then work at keeping it there for between 20 - 60 minutes. We have belts at the gym that you can ask for, but they get a bit funny about handnig them out, so i don't ask as i don't like to be considered a pest.

Gems think about yr muscle like a spring. If you stretch it, it becomes elongated and lean, if you leave it unstretched its a coiled dense mass. To encourage lean muscle development you MUST stretch, or else you will have contracted muscles which will look larger and squat.

Do you think this may be why my belly hurts??? see above 2 posts

Fantasseee
03-08-2006, 02:11pm
Well i imagine that's certainly a contributing factor, also you have used it, hard!, so it is probably hurting in the same way yr arm would if you lifted heavy objects all morning. I think consistency is key here. You are a little bit all or nothing with your exercise, instead of 300 situps x times a week. Why not 75 twice a day, seven days a week? Or start off a bit easier and then build up to 300?

If youre really sore then your body is communicating with you that you have hurt it. If it's not happy it will resist what you are trying to do. Instead consider yr body as an engine, it needs the right fuel and lubrication and ideally keep it ticking at 50mph. If you drive it like a boy racer, 0-60 wheel spin starts, revving the engine wildly and then slamming on the breaks, youre going to end up knackering the cylinder.

I've been doing that for the last few sessions on the hamstring machine. It BURNS. I keep waiting for one of the trainers to come and tell me I'm doing it wrong though - things I read always seem to stress that you need to do a full range of movement.

I did it with the outer thigh machine tonight too, like you said. And...

It works on the same principle as pilates and callenetics. Where you isolate the muscle then hold and pulse, i can't imagine it is a bad thing.

the one i just refuse to do is where you lay on your back and push the platform back straightening your legs and then bend your legs again to hold the weight as it comes back.

I just feel it is really bad for your knees. Could be me being paranoid as my knees aren't great but it just seems wrong in its design.

i quite enjoyed doing that, it was the one where you sit upright and put your feet behind a bar and push you legs out straight, i found that extremely difficult and my legs were shaking, the instructor took all the weights off, but even doing it without the weights was difficult.

Im just back from the gym and i stretched:thumb:  , then as i think as previously posted to use the weights first before doing cardio, the 15 min rule before you start to burn fat. what do you think of this workout

stretched
Free weights-arms and legs 15-20 mins

treadmill on random programme with hand weights and short bouts of running 25 mins

bike 20 mins

stretch

i kept an eye on my heart rate and doing cardio it was between 130-158 bpm.

do you think this is enough to tone and loose weight if done 2-3 a week?

Work out for 5 mins first and then stretch, then stretch again right at the end. The cardio sounds good, try and build up the running so you get to the point where you can run for longer amounts of time. this page talks about the bpm yr aiming for depending on yr age;

Gemma, hope you're not doing the all or nothing thing again! Don't overdo it by going everyday and burn yourself out...

I've been out for a run tonight, about 35 minutes.

I'm going to join this thread if you don't mind.
I went for a 40 min run tonight, it's very hilly where I live so that makes it hard. I'm doing a 5 mile race on Sunday, I run with a few friends and we enter races every now and again to give us a target and make sure we don't just stray off the fitness path!

I'm going to go again on Friday morning.

ChelseaHarvey
13-09-2006, 10:33pm
5 miles wow flipflop, thats great well done you

Diddlum
13-09-2006, 10:36pm
flipflop, it's hilly round here too so I know exactly where you're coming from! Berluddy hard isn't it? The worst bit on my route is quite a steep but shortish hill, it really tires me out and then straight after that it's a very very slight hill, so it's really hard to recover from the steep hill.
Sorry if that was a bit rambly, you know what I mean though?
At least there are some downhill bits too though!

I'm actually starting to enjoy running now. Thinking of looking for a running club.

flipflop
13-09-2006, 10:37pm
It's hard going though! I did do a 10k race (think just over 6 miles) back in February in just under an hour, but then we moved house and it got too hot to run this summer so I've lost a lot of my fitness. I want to get back on track this autumn so am planning on running three times a week.

flipflop
13-09-2006, 10:40pm
Didds, the hills are a KILLER but I always just try and remember that it's doing me good! A running club is a great idea if you don't have friends to run with, my motivation can be a bit weak but if I have arranged to run with someone then I'm honour bound to go. It really helps.

I love the downhill stretch after a steep hill, it spurs me on to tackle the next one.

You get used to them surprisingly quickly Gemma, at the start I'd just have a target of running to a particular house or lampost, then a bit further next time....it'a amazing how quickly your fitness levels improve. A lot of it is mind over matter though.

I ran about 4 miles this morning (my friend v kindly sat with E and J, but she has a vested interest as we are running together in the race on Sun and she wants to make sure I'm definitely doing it). It was v hard, and I walked up one hill but I felt BRILLIANT when I got back.

I'm actually looking forward to a 5 mile cross country race on Sunday morning. If I had heard someone say that a few years back I would have thought they were bonkers.

flipflop
17-09-2006, 10:11pm
Well, I did the 5 mile race today and it was HARD. It was very warm and the race started at 11.15 so the sun was high and in your eyes the whole way round.

It was a very scenic run, along roads and over fields and farmland with lovely views but between 5 and 6 km there was a hill that was more like a wall, just vertical! Everyone of my standard walked it, there was no way I could run up.

I hated the run but felt brilliant when I finished. One of my friends did it in 35 mins, but he is a pretty good runner. My time was 49 mins, which was okayish for me given the warm day.

I went along with five friends and we all went for a well deserved beer after. My legs are going to be SO stiff tomorrow!

Am going to try and run on Tue and Thur with another couple of friends who live nearby.

Wow flipflop, that's brilliant! I think that's fantastic that you did it in 49 minutes cross country, if you normally do it in 42. Especially if you walked that hill. Well done you!

Yesterday I went to the gym and did weights for about half an hour, then I ran for 35 minutes on the treadmill. I only managed 5.5km though (which I worked out is 3.4 miles). It took me nearly 32 minutes to do 5km.

My bum aches a bit today so it must be doing me some good.

I haven't done anything since last Sunday. I didn't go out for a run on Tuesday night (can't remember why), then was going to go out on Wednesday night for a run but didn't make it (again I can't remember why!) and on Thursday when I usually go to the gym I was running so late with everything that I didn't get time. And today I didn't go to the gym this morning like I usually do on a Sunday because we went to see my MIL in hospital. I might go out for a run tonight - we'll see. Depends what time I have tea.

Hello all,

I just joined a gym and have been everyday so far bar saturday. Just wondering how long is sufficient per day?

I spend about 10 mins cross trainer, 10 mins running, 5 mins rowing and 5 mins stepper. I am gonna start using the sit up thingys too and at some point learn how to use the weights, but until then is that enough? Compared to what you guys do it seems a pittance!

I'm not over weight (although do want to shed a few pounds as the ticker suggests) but i do want to tone up mainly and becoe a fitter person.

Went to the gym today for a 2 hour session, did cardio and some weights on my arms along with situps - im really tempted to go back tonite and do some more cardio but i wont as im going back tomorrow!!!!

I did 3.5 miles on the runner, 10 mins on the treadmill, we have this new machine that makes you vibrate everywhere it seems very popular not sure what it does though but i might havea go on it tomorrow

Have booked for 12 PT sessions with my PT he did me a great deal for £125 i saved £60 as were real good mates and he is good mates with my mum. From next week im going to start having 2 a week with him

03-10-2006, 07:43pm
I had about a week or so of not going to the gym but I went on Sunday, should be going out for a run tomorrow night and gym on Thursday.

Gemma, there's one of those vibrating things at our gym too - Vibrogym. I haven't tried it yet but I remember Fants talking about it, she'd definitely tried it. I can't remember which thread it was on to search for, maybe just ask her about it when she's back from hols.

applejack, I usually try to do about an hour or hour and a half when I go to the gym, but then I only go twice a week and one run out on top of that. I think half an hour a day (or most days) is ok, in fact it's probably better because you're active more days, iyswim. The only thing is you should really be doing some weights too, the sooner you get one of the gym instructors to show you how the better really. Then you'll probably spend something like half an hour on cardio stuff and half an hour on weights, but you will definitely get more benefit from a combination of the two.
Sorry for rambling! Hope something in there makes sense?

(PS Don't tell Damz I said so but there are lots more knowledgeable people on the fitness forum of handbag!)

We've got a vibrogym at our gym too it's great. apprently burns 500 cals for every 12 minutes on there. basically you do exercises such as squats, lunges etc ie get into the position you would if you were to do a lunge for example press vibrate and away you go. max on each exercise in 60 secs. In our gym there is a huge wall of pics to show which exercises you can do on it.

I went to the gym today did about 90 minutes...only 30 of them were cardio and the rest were weights - i don't know if i should increase my cardio. I've also done 15 mins swimming and taken the dog out for a walk.

can't wait to see results.

I have only just seen this thread but perhaps it will help to motivate me to go to the gym a bit more. I really don't make the most of my membership. I went on Monday and did a run on the treadmill and am going spinning tonight but I really ought to go a bit more.

I think you're doing the right thing by not going if you're still achey - aren't you supposed to leave a day in between anyway, or at least work different parts of your body on different days if you go every day?

I went last night, upped my weights which I was quite pleased about and jogged for 30 mins on the treadmill. Only quite slow though but at least I didn't stop! I'm aching a bit this morning but it feels good!

Todays wa s ahard session though and i did some stuff i hasnt b4, i had to do some work on a marshmellow type thing, it was a shape of one, and had to do sit-ups on it it was really hard but god did i feel it, i shall def be doing that in future

Was going to go tomorrow but i cant as i have B&Q comming and stuff for my kitchen so il go thurs and do loads of cardio and then fri with my PT then next week il start again 3 x a week..

Diddlum
21-11-2006, 04:13pm
ooh I haven't heard of one of those marshmallow things before! I guess it's a bit like doing situps on a gym ball?

You must spend a fortune on that personal trainer - why don't you just have one session a week or one a fortnight with him, at least you know the things to do now so you don't actually need him there all the time. Or do you need him to motivate you?

I went to the gym on Sunday morning, I did about 40 minutes worth of weights and 20 minutes on the treadmill, 10 minutes on the stepper.

I've been looking on the fitness forum of handbag a lot recently, and all the experts on there are saying that weights are far more important than cardio, so I'm starting to concentrate more on weights now. I'm going to try and start doing some stuff at home too, I was running once a week but now it's cold I can't motivate myself to go out! I can only manage two sessions a week at the gym, it's a bummer.:-(

ChelseaHarvey
21-11-2006, 04:18pm
Didds it more for the motivation that anything and he also makes me work harder say if i go on my own he pushes me

I think that when i book some afer xmas il do it once a week and not 2 a week....

I have been using weights alot with my PT i just dont want to bulk up, i want to lose the weight firsta nd then tone which is why i like doing alot of running or on the cross trainer

Okay, so I've only just started back at the gym after a very long break (generally I'm useless and hate the idea of exercise, but am trying to get fitter and more with it) so please bear with me! I'm starting in slow, as recommended by my PT (DH!) and am nowhere near the level that you ladies are, but I'd like to join on here for inspiration and motivation, if that's okay?

Yesterday was my first day back in. Went down first thing before work (totally useless at going after work) and did 5 minutes on the rower, 12 minutes on the treadmill and 6 minutes on the cycle (was supposed to be 12 minutes, but I felt phyically sick and kinda faint, so decided to reduce it).

Didn't go this morning - want to build up to daily, but think it'd be pushing it too hard to do this right from the start! - but will be going tomorrow. For the time-being DH has recommended that I just concentrate on aerobic (just to settle me back into the routine of going) and then after Christmas we'll add in some weights work. I'm also planning to try out a few of the classes, but that won't be until after my exams in mid-Dec.

Good luck ladies. Keep up the good work!

Well done. Try not to do too much at first or you'll burn yourself out, injure yourself or just end up hating the gym.

That's what I figured. I'm trying to ease myself into it gently, and then when I'm starting to enjoy it I can up my attendances a bit!

I went last night!:ellie: Did 5 mins on the cross trainer, 5 mins on the stepper, quite a lot of weights, the 20 minutes jogging on the treadmill straight on to 10 minutes walking on a high incline. I can feel it today! Makes a difference when you haven't been for a while!

I was intending to go this morning, but we went to see some friends last night and didn't get back till late, so I just couldn't haul my lazy body out of bed early enough! Can't got tonight to make up, as we're out visiting other friends, so will aim for tomorrow morning (assuming we don't stay up too late!).

I went back to the gym today and boy it felt good, although i did find it hard even after 2 weeks, well 3 weeks today

Did 20 mins on the runner at 6.6 speed
10 Mins on the cross trainer
Some leg work
some arm work at 25/30kg
Abs work
& work with the ball with 3kg weights

I also picked up a timetable so that i could look at the classes and the times - & try these

Well I have just purchased 2 new dvds to add to my collection. I have decided Iam going to try and do a dvd at least 4 times a week.

I cannot get to the gym, so this is the best option for me.

I was doing really well with my dvds until about October, so determind to get back into it, and tone my wobbly bits :ellie:
