Any ideas??? :help:

Our old Electrolux hasn't worked properly for years  and someone at work was selling their mum's Dyson for £25, so I bought it. Only downside is, she must have/have had a dog, because as soon as you turn it on it REEKS of dog :yuck: :zombie: I've emptied the cylinder bit, washed it (the stench was so strong, seriously made me feel ill - on the upside though we now know we're definitely never getting a dog  ), left it to soak with some degreaser in, took the rest of it outside and banged it/shook it to get rid of as much dust as possible from inside. It still smells :hissyfit:

I know you used to be able to get talcum powder type stuff to put inside vacuum cleaner bags to make them smell nice (Febreze? Shake 'n' Vac? :puzzled: ), would that work with a bagless? Anyone have ANY ideas how to get rid of the smell? I'm guessing it will just fade over time as the thing is used, but I don't REALLY want to stink my house out every week for however long if I don't have to

Cotton wool balls soaked in lavender oil then put in the bag/whatever holds the muck! I've never tried it but it's supposed to smell lovely.

Maybe chuck a car air freshener in the container?

we have a dog and I am sure ours pongs a bit. I read someone recommending the lavender oil on cotton wool thing the other day and tried it and was THRILLED with the result. the whole of upstairs smelt beautiful for at least 30 mins  Definitely give it a go!

Thanks all! Well I tried it with Vanilla perfume oil (as that's all I have, plus I don't like lavender  ), and it WAS better.....but still doggy. Kind of vanilla-scented-dog, if you will :zombie: :yeahright:

Anyway, I emptied the cylinder, washed it out again, and I think I'm just going to continue doing that, then putting vanilla in before we use it (only once a week) and hope that over time our dust replaces the doggy dust and the smell goes :fingerscrossed: The smell doesn't linger for long once the room has been done, but we'll just have to remember not to vacuum less than an hour before anyone comes round

Only thing I've tried before is crush up insence cones inside, which did a fab job :thumb: (our smell was some toast or something that had gone mouldy in there :zombie:)
