J has been coughing for the past 3 nights & waking herself up. I have tried Tixylix but it is about as much use as an edible chastity belt
Anyone got a good medicine they can recommend for tickly coughs :?:
Also, how do you know if it turns into a chest infection? It is tickly atm but she has alot of phlegm that she can't get rid of :? When is it time to check it out at the docs?
BTW I am posting this in here only (not in HB) so I do hope you will all rush to my aid in the spirit of helping the boards grow :D

Hi Pikeypants. I've never really found any children's cough medicine to be that effective, to be honest, although I'm sure there are some that I haven't tried.
If my daughter has a cough that's disturbing her sleep, I usually try to make sure that she's slightly propped up in bed (when she was smaller, we used to put books under one end of her bed), and also put a bowl of steaming water in her room (out of reach, of course). These helped a bit, but unfortunately there's not always a lot to be done about coughs - coughing is a sign that your body is working efficiently, and it's perhaps better not to try to suppress it at all (although we'd never get any sleep that way!).
I don't know about an infection - but I'd probably be looking at heading for the doctor's if the cough was still bad for over a week.

Have you tried the Chesty Cough Tixilyx, because we were always using the tickly cough one but J gets quite phelgmy too and there is one specifically for phelgmtastic babies and we find it works.

There's a night time tixylix that I think works better that bog standard.
Also worth giving a wee dose of baby nurofen to help with any inflammation and soreness.
Jen would likely develop a raised temp if the cough turned into a chest infection.
Hope it settles soon. xx

Foolproof cure for coughs - I tried it when I had whooping cough a few years ago....
Boil water and steep a handful of Juniper berries in it. Let it cool and drink.
None of the "over the counter" remedies help coughs at all (but it helps line the pockets of the drug companies.....)
We give a dose of medised when James is particularly icky and it seems to help but tbh it's better for them to cough it all up as that reduces the chance of it developing into a deeper infection
Like Cherry said, if she develops a raging temp, or her breathing rate is really high (over 40 a minute) then get her seen

HI PP
I agree with Shamu on this. The one and only time I gave Ellie Tixylix night she ended up with a rip roaring chest infection. I can't say conclusively that it is linked but it put me off ever giving her the stuff again.
Steam can help them cough it up - either by filling the kitchen using pans on the hob and the kettle or using the shower in the bathroom and closing the doors. There is some truth in the old housewives tales ;)

have you read that Tixylix has quite a few possible side affects,
headaches
stomach aches
Dry throat
I have some simple lynctus, that was prescribed by the doctors.

 Had no idea about those side affects LJJ- I never read the leaflets :badmammawhoopasssmiley:
It is nteresting that you all talk about steam because we came from a flat that was damp as hell but we had a humidifier on constantly (& she was fine) to here where it is normal humidity but I put the humidifier on in her room every night to disguise the noises from the pub downstairs. Do you think this could be drying her throat out?
BTW I dosed her with Medised tonight & she has only woken once so far parched for water (think I have the heating too high today though as it wamed up).

aaaw crap.
Mum of child with frequent chest infections who gives child tixilix now feels guilty.
That said the one I do use loosens the phlegm and he usually upchucks afterwards, bringing three tonne of mucus with it.
FECK! Taking him to the docs tomorrow to be checked for yet another chest infection.

Lola - It may have been a coincidence but I'm not willing to take that chance. Like J she is prone to chest infections and she became really unwell about 48hrs after she'd had the tixylix when she had only had it to settle an irritating cough. Sorry to hear J is unwell again. You have to make the right choice for you and J at the end of the day. If tixylix works for J then use it, like I say, it may have just been coincidence - it was also a year ago, when she was less able to bring the gunk up than she would be now.
Didn't mean to make you feel bad

NO help to you now but when Lu had a bad cough some months back both the HV and the GP and also my Sister HV all told me that under the age of 5 nothing really gets rid of a cough!!
Someone told me to give her warm orange squash with honey in it but i'd rather her cough than listen to her teeth fizz away   :wik:
Hope she recovered ok!

I have found that over the counter cough medicines are as useful as a hot tea with lemon as honey. Kind of nice for a second but won't sort the cough out.
I assumed that children ones were probably even less usefull.
Clarissa sleeps with a humidifier and with the mattress lifted with a couple of books if she is a bit ill.
But the only time she's had a cough Ive given her something I have always had for chesty coughs and phlegm both of which used to make my asthma really bad when I was little. It's called FLUIDASA and my mum sends it to me or I buy when i am in Spain. It works almost immediately and it has a pretty strong sedative effect which really helps with asthma and coughs. (it knocks me out completely). The leaflet says it can be given to under fives so I halved the recommended dose just in case (only after clara was over a year old, never before). The active ingredient is called Mepifilina.
I'd never tell anyone to use a prescription medicine without medical advice, but we spaniards see nothing wong in medicating ourselves
I know this won't help sorry
