View Full Version : News from Doppler Scan today - Not that good

Princess Fiona

Had my Doppler Scan this morning at 10:30am and they couldn't get a decent trace and they "think" that the placenta isn't doing its job 100% :sigh:

I was in there for about 30 mins and the lady was trying to get a decent reading but couldn't. I then had to wait another 30 mins whilst she got a 2nd opinion and that lady couldn't get a decent trace also.

I then had to wait again to see the Dr, he checked through all my notes and basically has said that there is a 90% chance this baby isn't going to term :sigh:

He said hes NOT overly concerned about the baby's size although today for some reason it measured a LOT smaller than it did on Tuesday :puzzled: (just goes to show how accurate these things are ) anyway he said that if the baby continues to grow along the same lines it will be roughly the same size as Lucy at term (6lb 3oz) so he wasn't concerned about that.

There are absolutely no problems with baby at all, every thing looks absolutely fine   BUT he's concerned the placenta isn't functioning as it should be which COULD be a reason why the baby is small.

SO now instead of going twice weekly for GTG monitoring AND for the further growth scan i had booked in for 36wks (25th March) i now have to go back Monday for another Doppler Scan and then EVERY Monday, Wednesday and Friday until they decide otherwise.

Dr said that BEST case senario is that everything is ok with the Doppler Scans and that they'll take me up to 38wks and do an induction of labour at MY Hospital.

Worse case is that at any time in the next 4 wks they decide they're not happy and depending on what gestation i am (if i'm before 36wks it will mean going to a different hospital for a section or if i'm between 36-38wks and they think baby would survive a natural delivery they'll do an induction but again at the other hospital)

Soooooo looks like we'll be meeting our little man sooner rather than later  Am going to try and get fitted for some bras on Monday afternoon so i can finish packing my hospital bag JUST IN CASE

This happened with one of my friends but basically after about 35 weeks the baby just stopped growing so they induced her at just over 36 weeks I think. She was a tiddler but all perfectly fine.

Sorry its not the news you wanted but exciting you may get to meet your little man sooner than you thought!!

Oh PF I am sorry to hear that. But at least the doctor says that the wee man looks fine, just small. It's great that they are taking such good care of you both :higgies:

CL i'm not that bothered about baby coming early tbh because they've said that it is unlikely that there are any problems, obviously the longer he can stay in cooking  the better but if being inside isn't the best option then he needs to come out.

I just REALLY REALLY don't want to have to have a section  not because i'm scared or anything, but because of the hassle afterwards. I'm already relying heavily on MIL and our friends to be picking Lucy up and taking her to preschool for me, i don't want to have to be doing that for the next 2/3 months because i can't drive  i did tell the Dr i haven't got time to have a section, but he just laughed it off

K I was driving again after about 3 weeks. And I had a huge baby dragged out of the hole in my tummy with forceps. I had no post-c problems at all.

I was driving at four weeks post-section absolutely fine. I needed help with lifting for about three weeks but otherwise was perfectly OK. I was desperate to avoid a section too, with having Sam and Chloe to look after, but it was OK in the end.

Hope your little man stays put for as long as possible

 PF - FWIW your hospital sound great, I think they are doing a brilliant job!
:fingerscrossed: this baby can hold on that little bit longer and wait for you to be induced but it really isn't the end of the world if you have a section, as long as you and you little man are okay x

I'm sorry it wasn't good news today but at least they seem to be monitoring you both closely.

I hope that everything goes well and that you manage to get to 38 weeks without any problems.

Princess Fiona

Thanks everyone for your hugs and well wishes.

I'm really pleased that the hospital is monitoring so closely  i can't fault them at all as far as thats concerned, well i can fault their hiddeous parking charges and waiting times but still, the care has been fantastic tbh.

Like i said i'm not actually that bothered about baby coming early as i'm pretty positive that everything is 100% ok and that he's just little iyswim.

I think whats bothering me most is fear of the unknown, i was scared enough of a vaginal delivery again but now the fact that there is basically a 50% chance i'll need a section is terrifying me, and i'm not actually THAT bothered about the operation itself but more the pain and hassle afterwards.

Like i mentioned earlier it would mean relying on family/friends HUGELY for weeks on end and i just don't like doing that. I like to do things for myself, and not have to rely on anyone. Also the thought of being STUCK in for weeks with a toddler and a new baby is quite scarey as well. I found it hard to get out without the car with Lucy because of breast feeding, if i walked anywhere local it was a total PITA because no where local has anywhere i can breast feed  i used to find it easier to drive there and if she needed feeding i could go sit in teh back of the car and do it, same with changing her. I know i'm probably just thinking up possible "problems" and i'm sure everything would be find and that i'd have people falling over themselves to help me but still i'm MUCH RATHER just have the baby, come home and get on with things.

Also i'm having to withdraw from the parenting course i started because of all these appointments :sigh: and because i don't know now when the baby is coming (not that i KNEW in the 1st place) i can't even book onto anything else for at least another 2-3 months because of not knowing how things are going to pan out.

Anyway, am hoping that they'll get a better reading on the scan on Monday :fingerscrossed: and that they just keep an eye on things and decides whats best.

Oh can i just say that i got such a fantastic view of my baby's face today :lurve: it was the most amazing thing i've ever seen and OMG did he look like Lucy  (so another minime then :teehee:)

:higgies: try not to worry about the section, TBH if it happens cross that bridge when you get to it! Its unnecessary stress over something that might not happen yet.

As for the scans and your wee man being small, I am pleased the hospital is doing a great job :thumb: and :fingerscrossed: everything is ok. oooh how exciting the wee man will more than likely turn up sooner :ellie:

Please check your car insurance as some insurance companies won't insure you for 6 weeks plus after a C Section!!

Hope little man stays put as long as possible and that he manages to grow a little bit!!

PF, I'm quite confused by your hospital and it's policies :puzzled: Where I work we induce at 34 weeks onwards with the aim of you having a vaginal birth. The postive things about your induction would be that you've delivered vaginally before, so much more favourable for induction ( basically it should work better for you because this is'nt your first baby).

Ok, so there is always the possibility that baby being small and the ? placental insufficiency may mean that baby doesn't cope well with the labour and if that happens obviously a section would be the way to go, but surly you should be given the chance to labour. No?

It would seem they would be performing a section just in case.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I think hospitals have different policies to suit the consultants that work there I know mine is very slash happy one of the highest rates in the country so they would more than likely be going for the C section.

I sounds like PF is comfortable with her hospital policies and that is what is important.

The may also not have a neonatal unit that is as skilled as your hence waiting as long as possible.

~Flutterby~
15-03-2008, 10:15am
I'm sure PF is very happy with her hospital's policies.

I'm not suggesting they induce PF now. I just meant vaginal deliveries can happen via induction from earlier gestations. So an induction at 35-36 weeks wouldn't/shouldn't be problematic, so to speak if she need one. So she might need to change units because of neonatal cots, but not necessarily need a section there just be induced at the other unit iyswim

It was in reference to PF saying that they would transfer her to the other unit and consider a section if she was before 36 weeks.

Sorry only trying to put a different spin on it.

:higgies: PF and lots of stay put and grow vibes to your little man.

Try not to worry too much about what might happen (I know it's hard, and I would do it too), the most important thing is that you and your baby are ok, everything else will work itself out. If I were nearer, I'd volunteer to come and help out if you needed it, but I am too far away :sigh:

:higgies: I hope everything is OK PF :higgies: It sounds like your hospital are great though.

I have replied on your other thread about sections :higgies:

ETA Not wanting to talk about you as if you're not here PF but Flutterby, given that Lucy was moved hospitals when she was born and PF was left at the first one, perhaps she'd rather give birth at the other hospital, if that meant that she and bubs could stay together? (apologies if I've got that wrong PF :flowers: )

Flutterby the Dr said that if it were before 36wks so in less than a fortnights time it would be likely that due to the size of the baby atm (only around the 30wk mark) that they would go for a section at the other Hospital (better care, better facilities and a NeoNatal Unit) purely because baby is considered a risk because of his size. The Dr said that they wouldn't want to risk inducing the labour, baby not coping with it and therefore having to have an emergency section iyswim.

I'm hoping :fingerscrossed: that i can just get through the next 2/3 wks and that everything is ok and that they will just induce me, i really don't want to have to go through a section although obviously if its the BEST option at the time then thats that.

RGK yes you're right about Lucy. She was delivered at one hospital and was in the NeoNatal Unit at the other Hospital (without me ) within an hour of being born :sigh:

There are NO NeoNatal facilities at the Hospital Lucy was born at so the 1st sniff of trouble they're wisked away.

The Dr said that 1 in 20 NORMAL deliveries at the Hospital get transferred over to the NeoNatal Unit  purely as a precaution, which was what happened to Lucy as in the end it turned out she was absolutely fine

Am feeling a bit :zombie: about it all today, i've got loads to do before the baby comes  and certain things i can't do because i don't have the space atm.

Am waiting for my Sis to get her new bedroom furniture so i can have her old stuff because until i get that there is nowhere for babies stuff to go its all just piled up in the dining room

I need to sort out more storage for Lucy's room as well. I'm going to have a v v busy week ahead  i know that much

I'm going to have a v v busy week ahead  i know that much

And please take it easy
I was prepared to face an induction as from 35 weeks, was induced bang on 37wks due to some blood tests coming back that were unfavourable. Had a weekend to sort out most things.

Yes - no rushing around like a mad thing. Get poeple to help. I know you don't like to, but I am sure that one of my problems first time was down to the fact that I was insistent that I was "only" pregnant, not disabled and I could do everything.

If you are pushing your blood pressure up, it will not help

Oh PF, sorry, just got round to posting on this thread. Sorry that your news wasn't that great and that it is worrying for you. I guess it is good that they are going to be monitoring you really closely and will make sure baby is okay all the time. Whatever happens I am sure you will both be in safe hands.

Hey

Only just seen this. I hope so much he can stay put for as long as poss. As you probably remember I was on constantl risk of having Lily from 28 weeks pregnant because of my eye problems. Luckily she was allowed to stay put til 38 weeks

I had all the doppler scans, constant CTGs as well for Lily so if you wanna chat you know where I am. (They thought Lily was going to be HUGE but she was only 8 pound 1 so not like they predicted!!)

Take it easy
